But, more important, the championship tops off a renaissance of pride which has been lacking in the Salt If youd gather all the football linemen from Utah, BYU and Utah State on one field and clothe them only in their and shgrts, and cover their faces, and then start picking three teams on the basis of physical size, youd wind up with as many Utes as Aggies or Cougars on your team. Its only when they put on their game uniforms that there appears to be a difference! The Aggies have beaten the Utes four of their last six games, including this year's opener, while BYU has beaten the Utes three in a row, but only three their last six games, In the last three years, the Utes stand at win over rivals, with a against their the Aggies in 1973 as the only triumph. Baseball people used to say putting on a Yankee uniform transformed an ordinary player into a good ball player. You cant help wonder how some of these physical specimens become so placid when they don a Ute jersey and face the Cougars or Aggies. Utahs offensive starters (skipping the wide receiver) average 227 pounds for the six men. Tenacious Defense A tenacious Murray defense dug in to roadblock one the best offensive units in the state as Spartans Mulliken, Paul Hitesman, Don Beck, Rick Nelson, Dau Nelson, Davies, Lee Westover. Kurt Smith and Rick Halliday were as strong as the iron curtain. The Bulldogs failed to take advantage of the lone fumble of title test in the first period when Tim Razzeoca picked up a Green fumble and sprinted down the left sideline to the Murray stripe. An offside penalty against Judge helied bog down the opportunity and field Kevin Brady attempted a goal which sailed wide to the right and fell short. Mitt died this week in Arkansas, where he had been hospitalized for several years. East High claimed Romney as a prep and then the University of Utah. He switched to the University of Chicago and lettered in football twice and basketball once. He played with the old Chicago Bears as a teammate of Harold (Red) Grange, as a quarterback and kicker for the Monsters of the Midway. Manny F ernandez Open Maybe you remember Manny Fernandez, who was a good football player for the Utes, but not recommended to the pros by Ray Nagel? Manny has been one of the top defensive men for the Miami Dolphins for several years and he was sidelined much of the early season with an ankle injury. But that isnt what made the news. The other day Manny announced plans for the Manny Fernandez Open at the Country Club of Miami, May 1. For a number of years, Manny has been national sports chairman for the National Assn, of Retarded Citizens, which will be the beneficiary of the golf tournament. As a college football player, Manny was one of the Wild Bunch, and Im sure many felt he would never amount to much, outside of football. But like Roy Jefferson, who is doing youth work in Washington, Larry Wilson, who works with the handicapped in St. Louis, Merlin Olsen, who has headed committees to help in Los Angeles, and many others, the training on the football field stirs a compassion for those less fortunate. Observation Ward Maybe those Indians who protested against using Indians and Redskins as a nickname for the Utah football team a few years ago knew something. Coaches Hold Meet The Big Eight Conferin Kansas City n Sunday to decide where to play the tournament it plans to inaugurate in March 1977. The final decision will be made by the conferences faculty representatives and directors of athletics. When plans for the tournament were adopted, it was presumed it would be played in Kansas Citys 18.000-sea- t Kemper Arena. But the arena already is rented to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for its basketball tournament. n One possibility is that the tournament might be played on the campus of the school which wins the regular-seasochampionship. Beaver fans were weeping for joy after their teams 12-- 6 double overtime victory over North Summit Thursday while the Braves had to cry in agony. One Small Inch It was a game of blocked punts, great defenses, changing momentum, and high drama, the type of contest that would have to be decided by one small inch. It didnt look that way early as North Summits Rene Potter blocked a punt and Larry McQueen took it 30 yards for a touchdown. The Braves led 0 before the battle was two minutes long. And it looked as if the Coalville crew would have things easy. Chad Boyer intercepted a pass and Kent Pace picked off another, both deep in Beaver territory. But the Beavers dug in and held both times. Beaver Gambles We were gambling a little to get back on the board, said Marshall. But that wasnt working so we just started to play our game plan. The first half became a defensive struggle with Beavers Dean Eyre, Mike Myers, Roger Don Marshall, Cullen Carter, Kelly Davis, Mike Robinson, David Crook and Tony White and Braves Boyer, Kay Riehins, Larry McQueen, Steve Robinson, Jeff Curtis, Scott McQueen and Scott Peterson making life miserable for offensive players. Beaver held North Summit on its first series of the second half and then marched 48 yards in 10 plays to get the tying score with Eyre taking it in from seven yards out. Once again, though, the Braves blocked the kick with Kay Riehins doing the deed. With 6:29 left in the third quarter, it was Punting Contest The game turned into a punting contest until, late in the battle, Beaver mounted a drive which moved it within eight yards of a score. But North Summit dropped the Beavers for a three-yar- d loss and a five-yar- d penalty moved them back again. field goal Eyre tried a attempt, only to have Curtis block it with 1 :49 showing on the clock.
