Show GOV MURRAYS MURRAY ADDRESS WE wn publish today to day the address which governor murray prepared previous to his departure for washington and which acting governor thomas embodied in or added to hla hia own brief but sensible message to the legislature L murrays Mur rays document is pretentious and verbose the suggestions D it contains are most of them on subjects with which the members of the assembly are much more familiar 2 than an official who spends nearly all the time ho he stays in the territory in halt fiat t lake like city and who hastede has tode to depend depond for information about general affairs upon common rumor and she bay say so soot or other herple several of the measures ho he suggests have hava been the thui subject of prey previous ious legislation and of the gubernatorial veto there is nothing worthy orthy of special notice in the tedious document but the sections under the heads of political situation polygamy and governmental action to each of these thesa we will pay a little passing attention we invite our readers many of whom will find the address so tedious and wordy that they will skip it for something more inter interest estl g to read the sections we have named the introductory paragraphs thereof are it is true turgid and but tiie the GG governor vernor vernon has managed to inake make one point in them and that IS is that he is addressing the assembly not as representatives of a abwah but as tati Q dmn f the whole people as lawgivers 11 bearing this in mind now pay attention to his suggestions of living interest eael and you will find them to be attacks upon a church and its presumed influence and institutions desay presumed advisedly be cause causa the insinuations and statements claimed to be facts are in reality false and made with the evident intention of being offensive and to be used for effect elsewhere now if tue tile church has properly no over the State which we wei do not pretend to dispute how bow much sovereignty has the state properly over oven the church with all ills nis assertions about the former there is nothing concerning it in the constitution while that instrument does most moat posit positively imly forbid the interference of the state with the adkins affairs of the church and yet with consummate assurance he proceeds to urge upon those whom he addresses not as members of a chur iiii tili but a as lawgivers to interfere with matters th that belong only to a church and with which the state has and can have nothing whatever to do what authority has the executive or the legislature a over the rules relating to the finances of any church under the sun oun the church of or jesus christ of latter day saints has a rule that all its ita members shall donate one tenth of their increase to the lord for the accomplishment of his work in the earth phere there is nothing to compel the performance of this regulation regulations bu but bui t I 1 it t is a d duty u ty recognized by all I 1 its ts members and officers from the first to the last wha what t have the tors of the territory to do with this nothing 0 more than with the begging which thrusts a collection plate or a subscription list almost perpetually under the noses of the people when they attend the services serviced services of or the sect to which the governor gives his countenance and support it is a matter outside of ahe the he purview of the assembly and 0 of ft the he governor 3 ov arnor and his meddling hiter interference ferenee ference exposes his utter ignorance of the duties of his office and those cf the legislature which he presumes to lecture the governor might with as much propriety ad vise the legislators of the territory to 40 forbid the exacting wading of dues and fees in a masonic Maso niCi odd fellows temperance or other organization chich has rules financial and other wise lse ise to which all its members are required to subscribe rib hia remarks about the exacting of assessments for political purposes is really laughable under the circumstances no sueh such a thing is known among the people of utah except with the little clique in which the governor himself occupies a conspicuous position we recommend him to apply his own language to his hia own case public off meers officers who make or aid in euch exactions are unfaithful servants of the people they serve he jae should bear that in mind the next time an asse assessment is levied upon government off meers officers nr fr party purposes and when the next subscription is taken up and business men are crowded into paying money for the nefarious purposes of the ring which plots against the peace of the great majority of the people of utah I 1 in regard to the polygamy question on which the governor wants some lawa laws enacted we remind him that since congress has undertaken the task and has already passed a law relating to this ques question tion tiou which is quite buff lelent sufficient in the way of legislation is against plural marriage il it would III ill become the assembly of this territory to do anything of the kind if a law were enacted in favor of extended marriage it would be considered hostile to the national legislature and would not be of any avail and it would be a mark of supererogation pere rogation to repeat on our oun statute books that which is regarded i as a aw for utah under the doc doctrine trahe of the supreme power of congress over the tha territories the governor asks if he may not in confidence asato ask to be allowed to join the legislature in the abolishment of the doctrine of hate certainly that is just what all sensible people in utah would like to see but who promulgates the 11 doctrine of hate who stirs up the country to animosity against the great bulk of the people of utah who fans the flame of passion who aulds aids in misrepresenting defaming and maligning mali maii gning those whom the members of the assembly represent who has by gross violation of law and duty insulted the people 0 o of utah and by damnable mad fraud sought to rob them of their limited political rights who has hab hom tiie tile lint first opportunity that has offered itself itsell until now to create lil ill feeling and arouse amuse the indignation of the masses by insulting untrue charges and by vulgar and ill timed assumptions who but eli ell 11 murray now in washington filled with bitterness and ana lahce against the tho people whom he has outraged by every means in his power let juet him cease himself to be an evangel of the doctrine of 0 hate lathim recall his unjustifiable aspersions undo his infamous work of trying to rob the people of their votes at the polls hold his tongue about the affairs of a church to which he does not belong until lie be knows something about it of which he can speak truthfully comport himself with something like true dignity not arrogance and vanity aud and seek to become the governor of the whole people of utah instead of the crony of a k mall clique and he lie will find no people on the earth barth who will treat him with more kindness and respect than those men to whom he ser mon ionizes moni izes seb ses and the people whom they have the honor to represent we believe that the governor has very bad advisers and would recommend a change A careful reading of the message which they have helped him to prepare shows this beyond dispute it also proves that they are more skilled in the art of unjust insinuation and covert cavert insults insult than in the uso use of grammatical language or connected and perspicuous sentences there are some things in the address to which we may refer at an other time this is enough for today |
