The bookstores business volume has grown steadily since the enterprise was established in a space provided in front of a furniture store m August, 1947 The initial inventory was valued at a modest $250. The two quorums of Seventy (Utah and Utah West stakes) which jointly own the bookstore, are careful to see that the stores contributions do not deprive individual quorum members and ward members of the blessings of making contributions. Operators of the store also take care to see that, if possible, families of the missionaries help support their son or daughter, even though the family aid may be small In one instance, it was determined that a poor family in Mexico, whose son was called, could afford only a very small amount, so the bookstore is paying the remainder, according to Richard Bagley, chairman of the bookstore committee. Those engaged in operation of the store have had many inspirational and poignant said. experiences, Elder Bagley Recently a young missionary and his mother approached the store committee for aid, say:ng the father was inactive and hostile to the church. They were sure lie would refuse to support lus son The committee decided to ask lum anyway, and three members went to the father. Tears came into his eyes, and he said, Of course, I want to support my sun on his mission, the man told Elder Bagley. The father has done so faithfully. The "father' of the bookstore project is Ernest Whitehead, who retired in May of this year. The manager and salespeople all receive a salary, arid taxes are paid even though the project has been coi polegally exempt as a non-prof- nd ion The first outlay for missionary support came five years after the business began Since then, ever 500 missionaries have been assisted, said Elder Whitehead. He estimates that enough converts have come into the church through efforts of missionaries who were partly supported by the store to comprise two large stakes.
