West outlaws, icoun-drelwhose enmes have been pardoned with the passage of time, often emerge as heros. Take Butch Cassidy for example The new National Center for Outlaw History at Utah State University has become the depository for all records and books about this branch of Americana. Wild s Gov. Calvin Hampton has proclaimed this week Outlaw History Week in Utah. And the Festival of the American West (also being called the Western Arts Festival) at USU coincident with Outlaw History Week is devoting much of its attention to the outlaw history. The festival opens tonight at 8 in the Fyectrum, special events center on the USU campus, and wilt be presented nightly through Saturday. T ne The West: pageant, titled Americas Odyssey, is written and directed by Gerald K. USU The Utah pioneers, because they were religious and ' their government theocratic, were probably the most orderly settlers of the American West. And that fact, ironically, made Utah the outlaw haven of the West, according to Kerry Ross Boren of Salt L.ake City, of the National Center of OeMaw History. Boren, a freelance writer, and author of History of the Lost Rhoades Mines," said outlaws felt safer from federal marshals in Utah and hence settled here in significant numbers. My particular interest s Wild Butch Caw.dv and the said Boren, adding Bunch, that the hit motion picture, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, portrayed personalities i .ore accurately than the facts. the said Boren film, Butchs and the portraying Kid's deaths m Sundance Last year the Deseret News played host to l.COO underpriinvileged and disadvantaged dividuals from Utah institutions at an exciting circus South America, is inaccurate. Butch definitely died in the United States between 1941 and 1944. Weve lost track of the Sundance Kid after 1918, although there are stories that he was in Utah, Oregon and Washington after that time. Both lie and Butch traveled quite extensively until 1918. The circus goers were thrilled to see the greatest show on earth, with its elephants, tigers, acrobats, stunt horseback riders and clowns and all the other attractions. - Historian K.R. Boren studies photo of Butch Cassidy and proclamation of Outlaw History Week. .Said There is evKh-ucthat in later yeais Cassidy worked for a railroad back east, which is ironic, since he spent most of his early life robbing them. Another proof that Butch and the Sundance Kid were not killed in a gunfight m San exhumation report of bodies once tnought to be the pair. The report, signed by the president of Bolivia, shows the exhumed men died of natural causes and were buried 14 years apart. The exhumation reports have been deposited at the USU center. The employment of Midvale Mayor Joseph Mazuran as Salt Lake County Highway Department security chief is being studied by county legal advis- ers. Highways Commissioner Pete Kutulas referred the matter after the release of a statement by William M. Timmins, County Merit System Council director, indicating that Mazuran must take a merit examination. In the statement, Timmins said Mazuran is not eligible for such a reciprocity appointment, as he has never held any ment covered position as an employe of a comparable jurisdiction, The statement indicated Mazurans credentials had been considered, but that under the merit laws, his employment is in violation of the spirit of the Merit System, if not regulations, and his employe status must be considered that of a provisional incumbent.
