Show Problem Health Top Drugs: This it om of a terlot of articles on science and religion written expressly for tlte Church News by scientists at tho University of Utah in Sait Lake City Each will discuss his chosen field as it relates to God and the universe. By EWART A SWINYARD A number of years ago, I had the privilege of serving as Gospel Doctrine teacher in the Monument Park Ward in Salt ABOUT THE WRITER Dr. Ewart A. Swinyard is dean of the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. He also is professor of pharmacology and director of research in the Cof has received lege of Pharmacy. It also was my good fortune to have as a class member on occasion President Harold B. Lee, who at that time was a member of the Council of the Twelve and also residing in our ward. I recall completing the lessons outlined for the year, and having one more class period before the new manuals would be available. Members of the class, knowing of my training as a pharmacologist, requested that I discuss Section 89 of the Doctrine & Covenants in much the same way as I would discuss these substances in a pharmacology class at the university. I accepted this challenge. The following Sunday I went to class prepared to discuss caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and related substances from the pharmacologists's point of view. I was somewhat startled, and a bit shaken, to enter the classroom and find President Lee sitting on the front row. He greeted me warmly. I suffered through the opening moments of the class period, wondering if I should follow through with the assignment that I had agreed to do. With considerable I apprehension, briefly explained how we happened to be 4 Stakes WEBER HEIGHTS (UTAH) STAKE Dr. James Kirk Moyes, first counselor in the Weber Heights (Utah) Stake, was installed as president of that stake, May 13, 1973, at the recent quarterly confer- ence. Hunter of the Council of the Twelve presided at the conference and effected the change assisted Carl W. Buehner, Regional Representative of the Twelve. r And many people take multiple prescription and proprietary drugs every day. A glaring example of the latter was recently reported from an outpatient clinic; a patient was found to be taking 25 prescription drugs and 26 proprietary drugs every day. This problem results in one and one-hamillion hospital admissions each year, accounts for one in every seven patient hospital days, and costs the public from four to six billion dollars annually. The problem of drug utilization control could be largely eliminated if everyone would use wisdom in all things, and follow three simple rules. Never take medication which was prescribed for someone else. Always take prescription medication exactly as prescribed by your physician. Consult either a physician or a pharmacist before you with a proprietary drug. lf He has served as a missionary in the Great Lakes Mission, secretary of a stake YMMIA and as president of an elders quorum. It made me realize that Section 89 provides a principle to live by that of wisdom in all things. Many of us live the alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffee concept, but overeat ourselves into obesicaffeine-containin- g ty. Others avoid all but abuse drugs routinely beverages, prescribed by their physicians and other drugs, including vitamins, they purchase at the pharmacy. Approximately 56 percent of patients given prescription medication take more than the dose recommended by their physician, 65 percent of women themselves during pregnancy, despite thf fact that the effect of such drugs on the fetus is unknown. S. Are Reorganized He has served as a missionary in Norway, counselor to the mission president, bishops counselor, high councilor and YMMIA talking about the Word of Wisdom and that I had been requested by members of the class to speak about these drugs. I elected to start with caffeine, and1 had no sooner started explaining the action of caffeine on the cardiovascular system, when Elder Lee removed a notebook from his inner pocket and began taking down almost all I said, and the illustrations I had put on the chalkboard. Needless to say, this unnerved me considerably, but I continued on and did what I considered an acceptable job of describing the pharmacology of this substance. In a similar fashion, I discussed the pharmacology of nicotine and alcohol, and closed the discussion with the admonition that there were many physical conditions in which subtle changes evoked by these drugs could very well bring about serious health problems. At the close of the period, President Lee replaced his notebook and pencil, and said, Brother Swinyard, that is the way the Word of Wisdom should be taught." A year or two later, I attended a conference in New york City which was conducted by President Lee. At the conclusion of the meeting, I went forward and expressed my appreciation for the message he had given us. He thanked me and said, Brother Swinyard, I have never forgotten your discussion of the Word of Wisdom, and I have quoted you many times. That was the greatest compliment I have ever had paid me, and one I shall never forget. Nielsen Nyssa Stake Boyd R. Thomas . . Ammon Stake |
