Frank- Church, heard Bert Quispe's story and is working on a bill to allow the rtohviantorn immigrant to stay in America. Bert was 11 when he came to Salt Lake City shy, frightened, not understanding the language. Today be is 19, and graduated this month from high school. It's been a long time since a woman in a Bolivian clinic told him he was going to the United States. "I didn't know what a United States was," he said. "But in about two months I was off in an airplane, so scared that I was going to a strange place." lie was taken immediately to the Primary Children's Hospital, as his friends Roberto, or Bert call him today was born in Sorato, Bolivia. Ms father died soon after his birth. "My mother used to farm and plant corr.," he recalled. "My brother he'd be about 21 or 22 now would tend the chickens." Bert crawled around for six years y in the adobe house because he could not walk. "One day a Catholic Priest came to our house and started to talk with my mother," he said. "The next thing I knew the priest was putting me in his car. I guess they had been planning it for a long time. I didn't know where I was going, and if I did, I was too young to understand," He stayed five years in the priest's clinic. But a choral concert turned up Friday night in packed Highland High Auditorium that was both unique and distinctive. The occasion was the 15th -Swiss Singing and Yodeling Festival" of the United Swiss Singing Societies of the Pacific Coast. The choruses represented, the Swiss Societies in Vancouver, B.C.; Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, San Joaquin Valley in central California,- and Los Angeles that joined with the Salt Lake City Swiss Chorus Edelweiss, It is the second time the Festival has been held in Salt Lake City. The first was in July. 1957. Max B. Zimnier is president of the Salt Lake Swiss Society serving as host festival. for the four-da- y The festival is under the general direction of Arthur Feurers president of the United Swiss Singing Societies of the Pacific Coast. The 500 singers on the huge Highland High auditorium stage were directed by Mrs. Werner (Margrit F.) Lohner, And lead them well she did, through an impressive program that ranged widely from historic and patriotic songs, to songs of the Swiss valleys and mountain crags. to sad and fun folk songs. Though the choruses had only held two combined rehearsals, Mrs. Lohner was highly successful in welding the singers into a balanced ensemble. Attacks were sharp, with dynamics and tone throughout. Releases of final tones were at times a bit ragged. Most important, perhaps, was the joy radiated by the singers. a joy that was enthusiastically reciprocated by the warm and friendly audience of fellow countrymen. Accompanists for the huge chorus were Heinz Gilgen and Charles Grob, competent tf) the nth degree. The program also featured a number of vocal soloists, most of whom accompanied themselves on accordions.
