Dr Starsky was “A concerned ASU alumnus” against the war in Southeast Asia and his political convictions member Wages Fight Publications Board: an editor's viewpoint During the past year conflict has errupted between the Publications Board and the editor of Student Life Sectton Three part B of the Publications Board bylaws state "The board will administer the programs but will not become involved in the y operations and will not assume active management of the editorial day-to:da- staffs of the various publications' Taking this stand helps the board to avoid a "conflict of interest" but it also places student publications especially Student Life in a precarious position As an editor and his staff puts in approximately 30 to 40 hours a week to produce Student Life the Publications Board meets approximately 10 to 20 hours a quarter to determine the fate of that publication In addition to this incongruity is the fact that many of the Board members who are appointed by executive council have no previous experience with the operation of a newspaper and maybe unaware of the affect of their decision upon a publication Who would possess an adequate working knowledge of the daiiy functions of Student Life that could offer insight into the decision making of the Board the editor The board presently consists of seven voting members five students and two faculty The addition of the editor would add a voice for the major campus publication in the decisions affecting the ""day to day activities"" of that publication Criticism may arise concerning the fact that the placing of the editor on the Board would allow the Board to become bias towards the paper Keep in mind that the editor would be only one voice out of seven or eight but would be assured that his opinion would receive equal recognition with other board members The present Publications Board upon hearing the suggestion of placing the editor on that body gave support to the movement for the installation of editor however the final decision must be made by the ASUSU Executive Council in the form of an ammendment to the ASUSU constitution We hope that the Executive Council will see the importance in giving the editor a voice in the decision making concerning student publications after all the Board previously appointed by Executive Council felt editor would be a worthwhile addition to its Editor Pauline Summers Starsky has waged a five-yea- r long fight in and out of court to defend his right to teach free from FBI harrassment In 1973 he won a damage settlement in the California Court of Appeals and has a $12 million damage suit against ASU pending in the Federal Court of Appeals He is also participating in a broad civil suit against the United States Government which was filed by attorney Leonard Boudin who defended Daniel Ellsberg in the Pentagon Papers case The suit was filed by Boudirt-ebehalf of the Social Workers Party and the Young Socialist Alliance Because of the recent publicity surrounding and supporting the demands made by the SWP and the YSA in their suit against the Government more than three thousand pages of m' differed from those who continued to perpetuate that war specifically the Government of the United States The deliberate destruction of the livelihood and career of any professor because of his or her political beliefs if contemptible Those persons responsible for such deceitful and despicable actions should be brought before justice and tried in court as any other citizen would be who had committed a crime In this inthose stance individuals responsible are FBI agents supported by taxpayer’s money 'and directed by men who would use that money to destroy the civil liberties of American citizens agents and their bosses continue to this day many of those same acts of illegal and immoral The FBI chicken-hearte- d destruction rights without so mu&i as a whisper from the huge American public What can be done? Make Demand There must be demanded by every citizen and its agencies that no longer will our con- stitutionally guaranteed civil liberties be violated in such naked disrespect No longer will we allow the harassment in- timidation and destruction of an individual’s professional Those very same civil liberties which Dr Starsky is now seeking to restore to himself and the American community are the very same liberties which our Founding Fathers sought to establish assan immovable foundation of American life Somewhere along the line during two hundred years of history certairgpZdfents of our government decided to move those freedoms into their own hands Dr Starsky the SWP the YSA and finally you must make certain that those civil liberties be once more moved back to their proper sanctuary and into the true constitutional fabric of the American political system “If government becomes the lawbreaker it breeds contempt for law it invites every man to become a law unto himself it To declare invites anarchy that the government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal would bring terrible retribution” BUI (144-46-433- GENERAL OWERftUNS PLUS If m i ’ Beck 0) by phil frank FRANKLY SPEAKING $l(cS or personal life because of well held political convictions No longer will we remain silent while our fellow citizens remain on big brother’s political enemies list of personal civil 1VAT'LL BE Bill Bock VOUR UWCH S3 Z4 Ml FOR A TOTAL OF COST 51 ft !" i ©COLLEGE MEDIA SERVICESBOX 9411 BERKELEY CA94709 |
