Show DISCOURSE by elder ORSON delivered in the N mew new ew tabernacle sail salt zako zabo city sunday aft dyler afler ezz erz noon june 1873 REPORTED BY davidow DAVID W EVA EVANS I 1 VILL call your attention to the first two lines inthe in the tho first hymn that was sung bung this afternoon az I 1 11 arise rise 0 glorious voigt zion thou joy ot of latter dayi days in connection with these two lines I 1 will cite the attention of phe the congregation to the first verse of the goth goa chapter of isaiah arise shino shine tor for thy 11 light haig is come and t the he glory dory ot of the lord has hisen risen upon thee the passage which I 1 have quoted from isaiah idalah has reference to the latter day zion about which whip h the choir kang bang sang at the opening of the ine lne meeting eting that there may be no misunderstanding about the people to whom the prop prophet liet had reference I 1 will read some other passa passages es connected with it and the redeemer shall come to zion and unto them that turn from transgression i assion in jacob saith the lord lora the zion thatis here spoken of is called upon to arise and shine for the glory of the lord is asen upon thee 11 thero there is no one ono thing moro more fully revealed in the scriptures of eternal truth than the rise of af the zion of our god in the latter days clothed upon with c the glory wry of god from the heavens a zion that will attract the attention cfall of all ali the nations and kindreds of the whole earth it will not be some wine thing that takes place in a corner cornet on some distant island of the sea or away among some obscure people but it will ie be something that wih wig will call forth the attention of all people and nations upon the face of the whole earth the rise of zion the latter day zion what are we to understand by the meaning ofelon of zion what I 1 understand and what the scriptures have prot rayed in legard regard to the meaning of zion is a people who shall receive the law of if god and who shall be ao aa of the lord as asals his people a people who shall be gathered together from the nations of the earth and build a house to the name of the lord in the latter days A people who shall have their abi abl abiding dino ding place in the mountains and who shall shail build a city that shall be called zion all these things are clearly portrayed in prophecy the people of f god must be a people who give the most diligent heed to his word they wili will be guided by revelation from him and among them theda his power will be made conspicuously manifest these a are to character characteristics ls conce conee concerning binz this latter day zion spoken of by the ancient prophets prophet which if the spirit of the lord bord will wiil enable me ind to clearly comprehend the subject I 1 will kill endeavor this afternoon t in my simple language andin and in my simple manner ner to lay jay before this congregation we find in the chapter of the prophecies of isaiah that the people of zion are to be raised up preparatory to the second advent of the son of god isaiah uses an exclamation something like this cco 0 zion that br ingest bringes fc good tidings get thee up into the high mountain it seems by this that the people called zion wherever the they y might be were to be removed from the he regions they originally inhabited an and w were re to be located in a high it h mouri mountain tain or ina inn lna very eleva ted fed k r region 0 gion glon if you wish to know the he t time me which this prophetic exhortation to the people of zion had reference to read the whole of the 40 th chapter of isaiah and you will find that at that period the glory of god is to be revealed and all flesh is to see it together eviden evidently evidently tl y referring to the great day when the son of god shall come in his glory when every eye shall see him and they also aiso who pierced him and all people nations and tongues under heaven ne aven wilo are spared unto that day shall behold him descend 3 ia 11 power and majesty to this earth in in his chapter the prophet isaiah has told us that then the mountains shall be broken down the valleys exalted the rough places made smooth the ga glory pry ary of the lord revealed and all flesh see eee it together then the iniquities of ancient israel will have been sufficiently punished for the lord will have rewarded them double for all their sins when that time arrives the tile people called zion will bo be required to go into the high mountains and they shall bring good ti dinos unto the tile inhabitants of the earth those who have heard the jho giroo mation lavation la af f the latter day saints ean ean pan judge whether we have havo brought good 0 ij tidings to this thu iane generation ration or not we were called upon by the almighty and his holy angels to go orth forth and declare to the nations of tha earth ahat god had again spoken cronl the hd heavens avens and that by holy angels sent down from heaven be he had again revealed the q everlasting gospel in all its fullness and for forty years pastie past we have bave declared buis this to the world we have also te testified stifled that many of the servants of god dhave godsave Go have haye beem beanor or bained hy holy angels and sent forth to publish these those tidings among the inhabitants of the earth and that others have havo been ordained by those who w ho received their ordination from heavenly messengers what greater or more glor glorious iotis lotis tidings could be proclaimed to the tiie fallen sons and daughters bf of inen than the everlasting gospel the same gospel that was wis proclaimed anciently by 13 y se jesusi bus sus Ruid and uis bis alost apostles les ies in the sixth verse of the chapter of the revelations of st J john olin we read of the gospel being revealed by an angel and that after it was revealed it should be published to all people liati nations and ind tongues under tle tio the heavens saying that the bour hour of gad gods s judgment was come thattie that the day in which the angel shou should uld ild be sent forth with the everlasting 9 gospel as should be specially characterized by flou poured red out upon the nations of the wicked when the prophet said 0 zion thou that br ingest good tidings get thee up into the high mountain he no doubt beheld in vision the great work of gathering the children of zion from the various nations of the earth into a mountainous or elevated region upon our oun globe prior to the death of the prophet joseph smith the tire lord predicted through 11 1 1 him that this people should be gathered out from all the nations under hea heavirland verland heaven and should be f establish lishin in the mountains or elevated regions of this continent and two or three years after his death twenty six years ago this coming 1 season this prediction began to be fulfilled for in the year 1847 the pioneers made a journey of 1400 miles from horn the mississippi river andr andy by the inspiration odthe spirit of the iho living god they rested upon tipon this mountainous and then wild and desolate teg reg region giom glom they commenced a settlement where the site of this city now stands and since that time this thia people gathered from every nation natal by the preaching of the everlasting gospel revealed in the prophet joseph have extended their borders and iia lia have ve built bulit towns and cities citie ayera if area nya many thun V iii in extent extend jn obedience obed lene lenc e to m te thea dimig i jicy J this pe people opi 0 left their native countries tri trl es all ali and d t the h e graves of their ancestors and came forth by thousands each succeeding gutc ebding year and peopled this high and elevated region of our country cpu we came camo ae here rp because modern their mouths by thep the spirit splat jp ot revelation and declared these mountains to be the abiding place of the latter day zion vve we came to fulfill wifod modern em prophecies as weli well as the predictions of the ancient ancien ao prophets peets have you not read L latter a ter day saints and strangers in this good old book a prediction uttered some bome hundred years ago by the mouth of isaiah concerning the house of the bord th that thab a t afas wa to be built in the latter iatter days in the tops of the mountains I 1 presume that you have read it many a time indeed I 1 have headd heard christian denominations of almost every sect in their psalms ana ant hepas refer t this prophecy they have spoken of tho the in mountain ri of the thin houe of that should be e established in tle the latel latter days upon the rhoun mountain mountains let lot me now refer reper you to that prophecy which is recorded in the second chapter of isaiah and which reads thus gicand and it come to pass in in the last days that the mountain of the lords house shall be established in the top of the mountains and shall shail bo be exalted above the hills hlf miss fiss and all nations shall flow unto it and many people rio flo shall go and say come ye and let iet et us go up to the mountain of the lord and ti to the house boust of the god of jacob and he will teach us ol 01 his nuys andee and we ivill paths for forout ont out of zion shall goforth go forth north the law and the word of the lord from jeru jerusalem hionis 7 if it seems then that the tho eople who would build this hoube house 0 of god ill in the latter days in the mountains are called zion and from them should go forth thelah the law what law jaw does this mean the civil law of the country to govern all people I 1 ea no the people of this american amerlean menean republic by their representatives senta tives in congress have enacted civil laws and formed a great and free gove government nt upon the face of this continent by which the people in a civil capacity are governed this therefore must have reference to the tho law of the gospel that god would reveal in the latter days daya unto zion from zion shall go forth the law says the prop prophet liet ilet and then to show more full fuli fully y the nature of this great latter day work he exclaims in the next verse and he shall judge the tho nations ns and shall rebuke many people an and they shall beat their thein swords in into ploughshares plough shares and their spears into pruning hooks nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither shall they learn war any more 21 it is very evident from this last prediction which I 1 have read that a very great and important work should be done in the last days upon the mountains the lord has to prepare or build a house in the mountains will it not bo a mar bellous work and a wonder for the lord to have a house aliouse in the latter day days upon the earth I 1 think it will especially when whua we remember that the tho earth carth has been without a house of god for a great many generations if there had always geen been a house of god on the earth the tho prophet would never have havo uttered this prop prophecy prophet hec but bat for the last 1600 years we might have gone from east cast to west and from north to south in the four quartets teis of the earth an alii then into the islands of the sea ea seeking for a house of god and we could not have found one what I 1 mean by a house of god is one otio which god himself commanded to bo be built bulit I 1 know that there are many houses built in all the great cities of this republic as well as in europe by the different religious sects many of them superb buildings and you will find written upon them gelid generally nally rally the house of the lord the thi louse house of god 11 the church of jesus the houte houle house of god called st pauls church 11 the house of god called st pete peters s church or st johns church we can find plenty U efthem them thom in new york and in all the tho great cities and towns of our nation also in great britain and all ill lii the christian nations of europe very grand superb edifices which have cost an immense in amount of money did god command i the build building auld of any of these houses if he d did not then they are not his houses and they are nicknamed houses of the lord by the builders or proprietors prie tors ors while lie he really hns has no nothing 1 to do with them did he eyer send an augel angel an gei gel into any of these houses no when did jie he ever appear in his Ms glory in these houses never did he ever over say to the people you have built them thein according to 0 the pattern which I 1 gave unto bof nov now accept them no such much declaration was ever heard among all these christian pat mat nations lations ions lons the loa has hm had llad ns nd bulo house on the earth for fon a grea great lt many centuries andhor that very reason the tho prophet isaiah salah was wrought froug ht u upon pon by the spirit of revelation to declare that su ch a great event as the lord lora having baving a house on the earth in the latter days should be accomplished and it its location should be ba in the mount mountains Mii mil from this wo ve draw the conclusion that it must bo be in a very elevated region when compared with the generall general level etel surface of the country whereon will be built bulit there is one thing that will characterize ar agte acte the zion of the latter days its people will not only be commanded to get up into the mountain mount tain lain but hut they will also commanded to build unto the lord a house in the mountains the pattern of that house being given b by y inspiration everything to it being dictated by the power ot of prophecy by the servants of the most high god and when the house houte is built if no unclean thing is summered suffered to enter therein to defile it god will come into his tabernacle butia but if there be any unclean thins thing come into that house aud and defile 1 it he will vill not enter for dwells dwell not in unholy tem temples F les ies and cewill he will not accept such a house ouse fin an offering at the hands of saints but we read that in I 1 latter iatter ater days god will ac accept capt house tha thail baij ball be built and only th el house erected to his name but also the tho of people showing that they must a tery very pure people or lie he would accept of their private avate dwelling st in order to prove this I 1 will i reer you now to the ath chapter of isaiah there wo we read and the lord will create upon every dwelling place in mount zion and upon her asem assemblies blies biles a cloud lane lanc and I 1 smoke by day and the shining of a flaming naming fire by night and upon all the glory shall be for a defence and there shall be a tabernacle in the day time for a shade from the hestand heat and fora fota for a place of refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain I I 1 believe belleve this building is called a tabernacle and it will rill accommodate from twelve thousand to fifteen thousand persons and it is a tolerably cool place for the people in the heat of summer especially to be a shade in the day time from the heat and for a place of refuge and a covert from storm and from rain min and tempest I 1 do not think that storms or tempests would a congregation that might i be assembled in the lords tabernacle but I 1 wish particularly to call your attention to the preceding verse c the lord shall create upon every dwelling place of mount zion at and id upon all her assemblies ies jes a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flame or pillar of fire by night ido I 1 do not see any cloud covering this house or the congregations that is before bedore me what is the reason the time has not yet come the time is to come when god will meet with aji ajl the congre congregation 1 t ion lon of his saints and to show ti his s approval and that he does love them lidwill he will wiil work a mira miracle cleby by covering them thorn jn in the cloud of his glory I 1 I 1 do not mean something that is invisible but I 1 mean that same order of |
