“suspender OD” old belt saying 'goes ' that “shaving brush in army pack was Straw that 'broke the rookie's back" — but to the men of this Camp Callan battery it wasn’t the shaving brush at all In fact we’ve all been looking for the man who invented what is known here as the world’s most uncomfortable pack strap or harness —take your pick And we have blood in our eyes Someone be- ware There's quite an interesting story behind the rookie and the new army field pack When we first got into camp from the reception center we were issued a few incidentals like bedding a gas mask a rifle a shelter half some tent stakes an& a tent pole and finally a field pack and strap— or as it is known on regulation army supply sheets: “one suspender belt OD” 4 About the only thing we cared about at the time was the bedding The pack and strap were just a couple more items we used for decorating our wall lockers They seemed as remote as the European war theater itself Naturally this condition didn’t last long— or it wouldn't be the army we’re in - It was during the third week of our training that the schedule read something battery like this: “Location Camp Site Officer in Burma-Shav- J CAC e During lunch hour (chow time to the army) while’ we were getting ready for the hike most of the men were quite conversational Tune was spent in filling the field pack adjusting straps and in rolling the tent roll No one seemed to mind the hike —it was on the contrary something to look forward to But when we returned —well the ’talk ran something like' this: (I’ll delete the profanity and vulgar language) “This is a poor pack” Just a statement by Pvt Sheffield one of the platoon merry men — usually "Poor!” I said “Either that’s a masterpiece of understatement or I’m a lot weaker than I thought I was” Peckinpaugh a er from Washington (state) looked over at my gaunt form and commented “At first I thought it was the pack too but I may have been mistaken” But the conversation couldn’t continue for so very long It was nearly supper time and- the main thing was to get the (not the shaving brush) off wash and dash for the mess hall— or I should say drag up tp the mess hall Anyway as the story goes after that and subsequent hikes we all began to wince slightly each time we would look at the field Charge All officers uniform den- pack and strap When we turned those pieces of ims with full field pack rifles belts leggings helmets remarks hike” equipment in last week there was Simple as that it sounded And an entirely happier attitude around that was the day we got our first the battery area
