of Monday June 17 11:00 Physical Education and recrea J tion will be emphasized in classes beginning Monday June 17 and continuing through the remainder The visiting of the Session faculty members who will direct these new courses are William R LaPorte of the University of Southern California and G Ott Romney Director of Recreation for the Works Progress Adminin istration with headquarters Washington D C Professor LaPorte will be on the campus for two weeks and Professor Romney will teach until the close of the Session on July 19 Following one of the most successful coaching schools in the this fourteen year history of feature it is expected that' the physical education and recreation program will be equally significant The increasing national emphasis on recreation is likely to be reflected in the increase in registration in this field Even apart from the tremendous demand from the civilian population for trained people in recreation there is the augmented need from the various defense organizations of the country There can be little doubt but that the trained leader in recreation will have a vital role to play in the defense pro- gram Ott Romney is well known to all western students and teachers Since leaving the College here where he was director of extension classwork he has advanced rapidly until today he is chief of the vast federal recreational program No man in the country is better informed on the present situation in recreation and its likely developments Professor LaPorte is one of the leaders in physical education and he has achieved particular recognition for his remarkable ability as a classroom teacher Canyon Party Planned For Third Week 5 $3 The annual canyon party for all Summer Session students and faculty members will be held during the third week of the Session at Tony Grove in Logan Canyon Professor J R Jenson chairman of the entertainment committee announces As in past years short hikes will be organized These together with games and a Poetry Dr Edward Davison Dr Edward Davison eminent British poet and more recently Professor of English literature at the University of Colorado will deliver a daily lecture at 11 o’clock through the week of June 17 Professor Davison has been an unusually popular lecturer at previous Summer Sessions and his new series promises to be equally interesting and stimulating The poet and his work are the subjects of chief interest to Professor Davison Last summer he gave a stirring series on Robert Frost the great American poet Frost later came to the College and Logan for a lecture engagement and those who had heard the lectures of the previous summer were the first to appreciate the genius of this great modern American It seemed evident that Professor quite had Davison discovered the essential spirit of Frost and his work It is this combination of the qualities of poet critic and able make Professor speaker which Davisons lectures so important as well as pleasurable His most recent book of verse has just been published within the past two months and had been greeted with enthusiastic comments by the major reviewers The New York Times review spoke of Professor Davison as
