Memory lapses were causing concern and giving rise to strange and ingenious solutions hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. Yet the ordinary, human memory is capable of amazing feats. Your conscious memory, if you live to be 70, will remember about 15,000,000,000,000 from your separate things telephone number to the shape of a watermelon. In your brain (youre using some of them right now) are 10,000,000,000 nerve cells, According to one theory, when a sensation or impression strikes a nerve cell, its form changes. The harder the cell is hit, the bigger the change and the longer it lasts. When the cell is hit hard enough, you remember. If it is not hit hard enough, you forget. Then there was the 16th century Italian professor who published a system which used the most beautiful maidens his mind could conceive as keys for the items on a list of things to be memorized. Curiously, posterity has forgotten his name. More valid are these memoend-of-the-ro- ll fair-to-middli- ry improvement rules suggest- nun ODD Page 3 ed by modern experts: 1. Be alert to what you want to learn make a conscious effort. 2. Be sure you understand the meaning of what you want to remember. 3. Use your sight, movement and sound memory. To memorize words, for instance, look at them, say them aloud, and listen. 4. Organize the material. Its easier to remember dates in a time of sequence than dates that are mixed. 5. Use a trick to remember. A music student uses the phrase Every good boy deserves fine to remember the lines of the musical scale E, G, B, D, and F, from the first letters. Math students remember the number 3.14159 (pi) from the phrase See I have a rhyme assisting the number of letters in each word. 6. Get yourself interested in what you want to remember. To remember peoples names, for instance, get to know them well. If, after all this, you still have trouble remembering things, take heart. Some things are bound to stick.. Furthermore, a good memory by so much strife, both ideological and social differences misunderstanding causing and mistrust, I would like to offer my own philosophy and opinions on these subjects. I do not try to resolve anything here, but perhaps I can put into words the jumbled thoughts of a few. First, I propose that the human mind has many pernicious habits, such as pessimism, selfishness, dishonesty, and even worry. But by far the most damaging of these bad habits is criticism. Not only is it habitual but it is contageous, and vile, and it is the least restrained of all. Prejudice, a frame of mind, is the prize-chil- d of an atmosphere of selfish narrow minded, morbid thoughts. It perpetuates the complete control of a person. It breeds despotism, and ignorance, and rears the two faced head of deceit. But all is not lost. Do not wail and sob, and throw yourself into the depths of fatalism. Just be discreet, for conscience is the fundamental root of discretion, and the poison of conceit. Sagaciousness is lucidity and of all the virtues of man, cheerfulness and enthusiasm are the most profitable. Listen to common sense, for it is for the most part the result of common experience sagaciously improved. I emplore all collegians, to be not only the leaders of tomorrow, but the benefactors of tomorrow; to form opinions only after concluding all there is to know about a problem. Then, when you feel your opinion is right, stand by it proudly, and discreetly. If your cause is wrong, abandon it without perserving even a memory. is not necessarily a sign of ind telligence; some very sacalled idiot people, vants, learn to memorize very well. Thats something to remember next time you forget. dim-witte- SCHOOL SUPPLIES and GROCERIES HARWOOD'S Open to II p.m. 2053 So. 13th East INGVAR'S BARBER SHOP BARTERING by Appointment Only NO WAITING 1703 South 17th East Phone HUnter Before 3:30 to avoid the rush 21 |
