Show Xovember 2, 1962 Conservatism Versus Liberalism article guest Chuck Akerlow by B.S. in Political Science and js presently working on'MjS. Describing the difficulties of labeling people dnd movements under tetms such as and conservative, liberal Peter Viereck in the New Republic concluded despite the and conservatism in America have frequently combined in the same statesmen, with Lincoln the greatest example of all with Kennedy and Stevenson being better liberals than the Popular front liberal weeklies of the 1930s and better conservatives than the lightest weeklies of the I960,. I think it would be politically naive to define liberalism in terms and conservatism of popular American political parties. The Democrats have their liberals. But we have seen President Kennedys legislative program fail in a Democratic Congress because of the continued opposition of a hard core conservative band of Democratic southern congressmen. The Republicans may boast they are a conservative party but Gov. Rockefeller and sev- other congressmen would quickly argue their own liberal point of view. There is even a party newspaper called Advance which is very liberal in view. But what do I mean by liberal? And conservative? I dont know and I dont think the parties do either. For example, Republicans claim that conservatism harbors individual expression and individual welfare. They claim their party fosters the rights and duties of man to live in free atmosphere. .They say their program will make him eral most free. But they oppose Civil Rights at every junction. They oppose free trade. They oppose First Amendment liberties when in conflict with so-call- national security (witness the opposition to Supreme Courts decisions on prayer, free speech for socialists, etc.). Their party becomes the haven for candidates representing the. John Birch Society and other groups. Where is individualism in these stands? Where is dedication to freedom? Thoir preference seems to be economic freedom in the and place jnarket governmental regulation in the First Amendment liberties arena. Their orientation is 19th Cen-Wreconomics and 21st Cen-WrCivil Rights. The Democratic claims to be the liberal party party. They Clte their party with achievements in civil rights, welfare, individual expression, and al- neo-faci- st y y most all the things the Republican Party claims for itself. Yet would they regulate business operation and nation- f flnavCe to a greater extent than the Republicans. They would give people economic security through government welfare. They would support large governmental bureaucracy and expand the tax base to meet the needs of the created institution. In short, they w ill spend money to achieve a goal more quickly even though the goal might have been reached through individual action. Their preference is freedom of expression and attitude while control of individual security through government finance and economics. It seems to me these terms are fairly meaningless and vague. I know men who call themselves conservatives that I admire for their position. Similarly I know liberals whom I would defend. And there are those from both nomenclatures that I despise. Hubert Humphrey liberalism differs from Harry Truman liberalism. Cleon Skou-se- n conservatism differs from Sherm Lloyd conservatism. And there are various shades in between. So we must face up to the somber question once again of what is a liberal and a conservative? And again we must sheepishly admit that we dont know and wouldnt hazard a guess. Maybe there is strength in that. Maybe it is good that we don't know what our dogma really means. Barry Goldwater is inconsistent. He is against federal spending but was for a new $1 million dollar federal office building in his own home home town. Eleanor Roosevelt is inconsistent. She would support individual responsibility but place individual security in the hands of the federal government through social security and medicare. I submit to you that these are strong positions even though they seem inconsistent. The strength of our Republic lies in its ability to harbor diversity. If we were to assume a monolitric ideology I think we would collapse. If we all agreed on what a liberal is and then all became liberals we would be as weak as a flock of sheep following a shepherd. Similarly with the conservatives. The Constitution was born out of diversity. The government with its system of checks and balances is filled with diversity. And perhaps this is the source of its strength. Should anyone attempt to exactingly define these two words I would cite him a fool. But even worse, if anyone should impose upon the nation one system or another, I would cite him a tyrant. Afterward, everyone felt much better about being chicken. But what does all this talk really mean? Jut what does this abstract term school spirit refer to? No one can really define it, it is just a feeling or attitude that exists in everyone to a certain extent. Does the person who sits in the student lounge and complains that nothing ever hapreally pens in this school school have any of this spirit? School spirit or the lack of it is like the weather everybody talks about it out nobody does anything about it. In the case of the former, however, it is always the same few w'ho ever get out and do the hard work.
