Show January The PARSON 26, i: uar FRANK E. DUDDY, JR. President Westminster College P. M. PONTZ Ass't To The Pres. RALPH S. GUNN & Business Mgr. Trees. SALT LAKE CITY 5. UTAH Mr. James Morris, President Student Government Association Council Westminster College Salt Lake City, Utah President Morris: The student Newspaper, the PARSON, has existed erratically as you are well aware. During the current semester, many dedicated students have laboured mightily for its existence. The Administration of this College has increased its role as Mother, Father, and Minister to the point that students are cleverly, and not so cleverly, manipulated. The PARSON is now a WESTMINSTER COLLEGE function, reflecting the responsibility, and good taste of the administrators. Such a situation can be f. naught but farcial under the convictions of its present Editor-in-Chie- Several years ago the advisor and editor of the weekly student newspaper felt it necessary to resign in the face of threatened censorship. The College has progressed since the days of President Palmer, but apparently this particular community is not stable enough to grant academic freedom. The deplorable situation is nically near-perfe- ct, but when Dr. Duddy highly lauds a well-manifes- ted non-consequen- tech- edition. tial Perhaps another editor with different convictions can publish a paper that will be pleasing to all. I personally cannot. Many thanks for your understanding and cooperation these many months. Half of our alloted budget has been used to this, point and almost half of the required advertising funds have been collected. The situation is financially conducive to the continuation of the PARSON for another semester. Please accept this as my statement of resignation. Sincerely, Wayne U. Smith I. FAMOUS LAST WORDS K. Initiates Pages The initiation started off with a Bang, when I. K. Duchess, Judy Chamberlin broke a paddle over the posterior of Page, Ken Denne. Paul Mitchell, Stan Clark, Ralph Squire, Gary Stark, Robert Storey, Bill Cook, and Ken Denne were the seven men who were initiated into knighthood, Saturday, January 20, at the home of Duke, Ron Twelves. For the Pages this was the last time that they would have to take any harrassment from the Senior Knights. Realizing this the Senior Knights made the most of the weather and their own sad- istic tendencies. The evening was climaxed by the Knighting Ceremony, after which Page Master, Dennis Helgeson led the older knights in the testing of the paddles. This last hit of exercise was climaxed when Duke Ron Twelves was smitten by Stan Clark with his paddle which was voted the most outstanding of all the paddles, and Page Master Helgeson was honored by the Outstanding Page Paul Mitchell when Mitchell delivered such a blow to Helgeson that his paddle shattered (as did Helgeson") under the impact.
