However, this does not necessarily have to hurt the pocketbook, as these fashions are the easiest to change for a look in tune with the times. When loose, styles came in more than a year ago, no power on earth could transd sheath into a form a sack. Today, as Paris decrees once more a marked waistline, it is an easy trick for any professional or home dressmaker to belt or control the fullness of last years loose silhouette. Today, if a woman intends to shorten her hemline to the scant 20 inches from the ground, which is just above the knees, the extra fabric gained from the hem can be used to advantage to make a self belt. Deep hems look bulky in any case. The belt may be encrusted or slotted through the bodice under the bust to feature the empire line, and the skirt mounted in gathers, or worn separately, with the front and back of the dress folded into casual, unpressed pleats. A leather belt or obi sash in contrasting fabric such as satin or., velvet would achieve the same effect. A trapeze dress could be transformed by running a double row of ruchings inside the garment, and gathering the width on to a drawstring. Pajama cord belts marking high waists are one of the newest trends in all collections. Also of latest fashion are the new rose-pridresses. Dresses of one color are no longer the fashion creed, but dresses with small rose patterns are of style for the shorter girl and the large rose prints are suggested for the tall, slim girl. By the time this article is printed, the fashion trends will probably be different. Dont despair ladies. Whenever that dress becomes outmoded, put it away for a few years, and Im certain youll be back in style once again. away-from-the-bo- slim-fitte- EDITORIAL Wow, this college life is great! ! ! Ive been here a week and all weve done is go to football games, movies, picnics and such. This was the comment of one of our newly matriculated freshmen, a young fellow, a little excited and enthusiastic and a little green, but very definitely a happy, spirited student. When I saw the wild look in his eyes, the eagerness with which he accepted any new challenge, the happiness in his smile that told me of the pleasures he was enjoying as a new member of this college community, I thought back over the many, many years when I was a freshman much like him; happy, enthusiastic, excited and green. When I remembered how excited I was then, and think of how much I need to arouse me now, I wonder what happened. What makes the difference between a frivolous frosh and a sober senior? Is it only the passage of time that causes this strange transfiguration? Maybe the added responsibilities have sobered me. And yet I dont seem to be so sober off campus. Maybe Im just cynical? Am I the only one that feels this way? I must find out! M f ; f' Monday, September 29, 1958 WESTMINSTER PARSON 2 Say you there! You are a senior, do you feel the same now as you did when you were a freshman? You dont? Why not? You say the others laugh at you when you do? Oh! Pardon me, you, too, are a senior; do you feel the same spirit that you felt as a frosh? No? How come? You have to keep up your sophisticated front? I dont understand. Oh! being happy is kids stuff, very childish, I see! (I ' think.) ... I say there, Mr. Senior, what about you? Are you enthusiastic about things like you used to be? You neither? Whats your excuse, I mean why not? Oh, thats a good reason! You cant impress anyone without being a 'snob, so you cant be enthusiastic or even friendly. Fine, thank t nt by College There are evidences about that 1958-5- 9 will be a year of progress for Westminster College in that students will be taking a larger and more responsible part in the life of the total college community. I will be most happy if progress in this direction is achieved because I firmly believe in maximum student involvement in those phases of the administration of the College which concern students. The Faculty decided in its Fall to inWorkshop, September vite student participation on six of the faculty committees. Full details of this plan will be announced through the S.G.A.C. shortly. I can say now that I think this is a big step forward possibly the biggest step of this type the College has taken in several years. This meatis that students will have a voice in formulating policy in many of the important areas which are the responsibility of the faculty. It also means improved communication between faculty and students. Budget building is another area in which very significant progress is being made. Since last winter the S.G.A.C. has been working with Mr. Hodges, Dean of Students, and Mr. Gunn, business manager, in building the Student Activities section of the annual budget. Previously the S.G.A.C. had budgeted only some student fees which were assigned to the S.G.A. Now students participate in planning much larger expenditures covering the entire student activity area. I wish to commend the executive officers of the S.G.A. for their excellent planning. In addition to these two major moves there are many other signs of growing student maturity. The Residence Hall Councils are reported to be increasingly effective in the cooperative management of Ferry Hall and Foster Hall. The S.G.A.C. has pioneered a most 11-1- '.' In some colleges students are not encouraged to take any part in the administration of the institution. In others they are relegated to an area of limited student management that permits little more than playing at Furthermore, in such colleges the administrators frequently let the students fumble in those autonomous areas and subsequently ridicule the students for their mistakes. At Westminster we hope to avoid both these errors and move instead toward the ideal of Christian community in which each member of the College community participates in policy formulation in those areas in which he has reason to be concerned and can be expected to act responsibly. raiTtta comrkht w iii rxi mca-col- a comm, you. One Stop Oh! This makes me feel so much better. Now I know that I m truly on the right path and that I can now relax and enjoy my unhappiness. I know now that Im not sober and unhappy but that Im being sophisticated, part of the crowd and properly snobbish. That makes me feel so much better. But now I feel just terrible for the poor freshmen who havent learned this yet. on Theyll just go being happy and unsophisticated. I do hope they mend their ways before its too late and theyve gone all through college being en thusiastic. An Open Letter Dearest Everloving Percy, How is everything you d little rascal?
