The International World --LOWELL MILES e, Member i Intercollegiate Press EDITORIAL STAFF Walter Miller Jack Harmston Joan Lamus Alice McGarrigle Herb Dunn Editor Associate Editor Business Manager Joan Ten Eyck Cay Goudy Lowell Miles TIIE MENACE OF COMMUNISM Communism is the most dire threat to democracy which it has ever received in the past. Why? Because this theory of government which has its agents in every country, and in all walks of life, plots the overthrow of all organized governments and the establishment of a proletarian dictatorship. The chief purpose of communism is the acceleration of the developments leading toward a world revolution, to achieve its purpose it rejects compromise with bourgeois parties, and parliamentarism asf a normal political development. The aim of communism has been amply set forth by the Sixth World Congress of the ComThe conquest of munist International on September 1, 1928. power by the proletariat is the violent overthrow of bourgeois power, the destruction of the capitalist state apparatus and substituting And years later in its place, new organs of proletarian power. Joseph Stalin said, It is inconceivable that the Soviet Republic should continue to exist interminably side by side with imperialist or the othstates (England and the United States). Ultimately-onm'm "" ' ?LnriM- er must conquer. With this in mind, what of the menace of communism? Is it not obvious that all the Western Powers are in grave mortal danger? But do we realize the extent to which Communists have penetrated into the United States especially. Most Americans do not recognize the communist front organizations, and it is of the uttermost importance that we be capable of so doing. Some of their organizations are: American Labor Party, American Youth for Democracy, Civil Rights Congress, and The National Committee to The Readers Scope, The Chicago Star, The Win the Peace. Daily Worker and the Peoples World are but a few of their official organs in the United States. But to be constructive, what should we do in the face of so great a danger. Since deceit is the food of communism, expose all facts; we should expose the identity of all known Communists and fellow travelers, prosecute all violations of the law made by Communists; we must continually correct deficiencies, maladjustments or evils cited by Communists; and finally, we must meet squarely through frank discussions the issues which the Communists raise. The time is later than you think. We do not have time for idle debate, but we must have action. Action, now, or else the Western Civilization will topple in face of the onslot of the menace from the. East. At this particular time, I wish to congratulate the I. R. C. on our campus, for the fine showing they made at the recent Regional Conference of the International Relations Clubs at the University of Utah. High praise should go to the delegates for their part in the Conference. Editor. The staff of the paper is planning a Christmas Issue of the Campus Crier. This issue will take the place of the regular December issue. There will be a slight extra charge, around 15 cents a copy. A more complete announcement will be made in Chapel next week. If you want a copy, be sure to place your order early, for only a very limited number is going to be printed. There seems to be a lot of talk about smoking on the campus, but as yet that is all it is. I wonder if it is the problem that many seem to think it is. About smoking in are the smokers stepthe or is the ping on the If condition the actual reverse? smokers must go over to the area around the gym to smoke, why not lengthen the period between classes to ten minutes? But above all. there are certian rules and regulations about smoking on the campus, so lets each and every one of us obey them, and if they are wrong, there is the established machinery for their change, namely the Student Council. Editor. Do-Flo- p, non-smoke- - UN GOUTER A group of second year students of French had a chance to put into practice what they learn in the classroom, when they were entertained by Dr. Yan-c- y at a tea in her cozy apartment at Allen Park Thursday afternoon. Fifteen Per Cent of Students Need Psychiatric Aid Intercollegiate Press Fifteen per cent of students in the nations colleges need some kind of psychiatric consultation or care, the Committee on Mental Health of the Third National Conference on Health in Colleges has announced in Washington, D. C. The committee said that of these are urgent cases who need immediate help before they get into trouble, another third have less serious neurosis and maladjustments and the rest can get along without preventive psychiatry, but would be better off with it. There are many students who do not fall in the fifteen per cent class who have personal problems which psychiatry could assist in solving. The actual number of breakdowns in any student will exceed not two body per cent, however. The committee found that very few colleges ofTer the services of a psychiatrist at present and suggested that teams of psychiatric specialists would solve the need. I wish that I might write about autumn nights and some fair damsel in distress or some other better subject. But I cant dodge the cold war literally thrown at us by the Soviet Union. During the war it was easy to know where you were. The Russians were fighting the Germans, therefore undoubtedly an ally. Well, the wars over now and what of the present world? It is quite evi dent that between the Union of Soviet Russia and the Unied States rages unabated the cold war. WASHINGTON Bernard M. Baruch said that he does not expect war between Russia and the United States, but he declared that this country be ready for anything forced upon us. Although the shooting war is over we are in the midst of a cold war which is getting warmer, Baruch said, as he told the Senate War Investigating Committee. PARIS French home service Moscow is outdistancing Washington in the organization of Europe. The spectacular reconciliation between Belgrade and Sofia, which some time ago would have seemed as unbelievable as a Franco-GermaAlliance, has now taken place under the Kremlins auspices. This represented the second stage of an ambitious plan. The first consisted in the agreements between Bucharest and Belgrade, and Bucharest and Sofia. This whole scheme is obviously sent to be carried out at the expense of Greece. Those who still hope to prevent the division of Europe into two blocs do not seem to grasp the real state of European affairs. n t and peace. Perhaps instead of trying to eliminate differences as a basis for peace, we may have to take them for granted and find some way of living with them without having them become incendiary.
