Show cewi iyii r tfi h - TEe Salt LaEe Tribune, Sunday, September 27, 1964 Cosa Nostra TV Star - But, Still No Try to Kill Squealer Joe Valachi By Associated Press Joe Valachl, who became a television personality nearly a year ago when he told his story of the Cosa Nostra, now spends his days forgotten in the District of Columbia Jail. His fans no longer write post cards to him, and Department of Justice investigators rarely visit him. He has told them, and his television audience, all he knows of crime in this country. Valachi was 60, serving a federal prison term for murder, when he suddenly announced a desire to talk. Department of Justice investigators interviewed him, then turned him over to the Senate Permanent Investigations Subcommittee. The story he had to tell was about Joe Valachi the crime organization known variously as the Black Hand, the Mafia and now the Cosa Nostra (Our Thing.) How much Valachi actually knew about the murders and robberies he recounted always was a matter of conjecture. WASHINGTON For years, by his account, he had been engaged in rackets and crime in the East. He told some lurid tales. One strange circumstance puzzled the subcommittee: He always was present when the crimes of which he told about happened, and yet he never took part in them, as he told the story. This would have been understandable if he feared prosecution, but he already was in prison and law enforcement officials had no intention of using his testimony against him. HIS' STORY AT THE TIME was that a price was on his head underwolrld figures he was exposing offered $100,000 for his assassination, he said. He was heavily guarded by Untied States marshals when he came to the subcommittee hearing room. There was another story, too that Valachi hoped to convince federal officials that he never again would be safe behind bars and that they should keep him in a hotel or some safe resort the rest of his life, so other prisoners never would have a chance to kill him. In Government officials arent talking, but there he has been, for months, and and no one has tried to MU him. jail He does get an occasional threat in the mail, but officals think these come from crackpots not underworld enemies.
