Show I 1 uhe THE anniversary THE procession and pr on 04 monday in celebration of the fourth were of BO so interesting a character that all who have witnessed them residents and strangers eo so far as we have heard were delighted with them the display which the children made added greatly to the interest of the scene and espe especially chally so when they were seated in the new lra Ira bernacle tabernacle the celebration was as fine I 1 if not finer than any we have ever had in this city and great praise is due to the committee of ar members of the various trades professions manufactures ac the th superintendents and teachers of the schools the military the marshal and his assistants ass is tants and in f act fact to all concerned for the pains they took to make the celebration a success there was no disorder no drunkenness drun kenness tenness no outcries and so far as we know no accident to interfere with the enjoyment or 0 r mar the happiness of the day if there was a person in town under the influence of liquor we have not heard of it peace good order and harmony P prevailed re and every countenance beamed with satisfaction and pleasure N no 0 person could look upon the vast audience which convened in the tabernacle to listen to the reading of the declaration of independence the peeches speeches the sing Ging singing illg and music and not be moved loved at the sight A more thorough and convincing refutation of the numerous slanders which have been put in circulation concerning utah and her people could no not have been adduced to the many strangers who were present if they did not retire from the building on monday convinced that the latter day saints were a cruelly maligned and misrepresented people they are beyond the reach of argument and are hopelessly hardened if the members of congress who passed that unconstitutional act known as ashe khe anti polygamy bill could have stood on the platform on monday and looked upon the thousands of healthy happy c children zon mon dren full of vivacity and glee seated before them and not felt conscience stricken then we should have considered them past praying for unless every instinct of manhood had been stifled within them they must in their secret souls have felt that a system which would produce such results was as infinitely superior te tile time practice which we are told is bringing abolt the nhe extinction of the old families in new now england as heaven is to hell in our description yesterday of the procession the want ot of space apace prevented us from alluding to many of its features which deserved notice and which w we e looked upon with more than ordinary pleasure the platform car of the wagon and carriage makers and the specimens of their work were most interest ng aa as well aa as the specimens of the work of the cabinet makers and upholsterers ster ers these i are important industries and justn justa present the movements of the he men engaged in these branches of manufacture attract attention for the question must now be decided whether we shall have our furniture wago wagons ns and carriages made at home henye by our own mechanics or depend upon imports ions lons from abroad to supply our wants canth mhd he bame same reflection forced itself stielf upon the mind in looking at the display 6 many other branches will the agri aeri culturists and dairymen produce all the grain butter and cheese that are needed at living rates or must we lm import the millers had their flour wh which looked very well as far as the appearance of the sacks was concerned but it required the bakers and confect tio ners with their fine specimens of bread crackers cakes ac to show the quality of the article the boys who followed the confectionery wagon and who particularly admired the superb cake the manufacture ot of brother brown which adorned its ita centre seemed to entertain no doubts about th the e taste or fineness of the flour in their eyes there was nothing half so attractive in the procession as that confectionery wagon they hung around it as flies doa do rounda around a sugar hogshead there was one feature of the drobes sion slon on monday which mus must musi bave have struck the observant stranger nat namely deiy iely the remarkable number of skilled uti arti sans in various branches of 0 business there is in this country We venture to say that no other city on the canti atti nent with no larger population hu ours can approach us in this respect when the lal lai labor or and skill of ics acs and manufacturers are properly utilized our community will be comparatively ively tand many of the articles which we now use will ie be str stricken icken itken off the list of importations we have built a city which is the ai ad mi ration of every beholder we we are compactly organized peace good order and union prevail to an unparalleled extent in all these and many other matters we have set the world an example it now remains for us to excel in other directions and a most pressing Dg necessity ex exists i ats for our people to classify their labor and use it and the skill saih which they possess for the advancement and enrichment of our territory IT is with a feeling akin to alarm that many of the english papers witness the tho exodus from their shores of BO so large a number of emigrants this season in one ono single week recently no less than about tsoo persons left the port of liverpool alone for america many merchants and manufacturers are alarmed at the departure of such large lar e numbers of people for it is salci said to C oe doubtful whether this emigration touches the classes who are supposed to need fi most they are neither agricultural laborers nor paupers haupers who are thronging ngim ngin fo 0 Liver liven liverpooo pooi poor to find a passage across the V usi em cm ocean england could spare the lalk ife class elms and not miss them except to feel reel fedas n lieveld at their departure but the majority of the passengers which leave leave for the wd west aro are from the great cities and manufacturing towns they are from the classes upon which england is dependent for much of her greatness and the preeminence pre pro eminence in manufactures manufacture which she eho has so long maintained and their exodus fore shadows the transfer of power and the supremacy of commerce to tue tuo west men have not been wanting to foretell that some day english laborers would find the way the irish peasantry found to prosperity and independence and when they did so an exodus would begin but they were looked upon as prophets of evil etil nov now TOT 1 that the tho people are flocking to ulver liverpool rooi tool k i such crowds with their faces looking t to wards the west those who formerly derided these predictions re dictions begin to have faith in them acx and think it would be infinitely t the advant advantage ag 0 o of the country to find soar soo means of holding out induce inducements menis to thi tbt emigrants to remain at home INTENSE excitement has lately preta at wheaton da page Cou county lity illinois Illin jih jiS over the tro trial triai of a man named
