courteously favored with the following 0 letier letter ietter to elder orson hyde from his so son n alonzo E now on a mission in england OLDFIELD ROAD SALFORD Blan bian manchester chester march 20 1869 dear father 1 I have been thinking of writing to apu for a longtime long iong time but a aa I 1 always have an instinctive dread of writing letters 1 I have neglected doing so until now but this orning morning in I 1 have resolved to bring iny my mind to the sticking point though I 1 fear my success will wil I 1 be but puro purt partial ial we are all well at present and are enjoying joy jos ing lug ourselves finely for my part I 1 can say that I 1 never enjoyed myself better than since I 1 have been on my mission and all that I 1 have to regret is that I 1 am better qUalin qualified cd to fulwil fulfil it however I 1 am striving in my feeble way to do all the good I 1 can and also to overcome my weaknesses and imperfections as fast as possible I 1 feel that tile the lord has truly blessed me since I 1 have been here I 1 have seen more of his power manifested than I 1 ever did before and I 1 can now fully realize that he will never leave us to ourselves or suffer us to be co unfounded so long as we put our trustle trust in him iveel that this thia mission bbs has been one odthe greatest blessings that was ever conferred upon me and that it will continue to be if I 1 will only magnify my calling and with the help of the I 1 lord ord I 1 will strive to do so instead of finding my labors an unpleasant task as 1 anticipated they would be before I 1 left home I 1 find them to the contrary in every respect for I 1 never feel so well as when I 1 have the opportunity of warning the people and teaching them in my poor way the principles of eternal tife ilfe ife and when I 1 have felt my weakness most and asked theford the lord for strength he has always answered my prayer for which I 1 feel to thank him and praise his name continually the work is not so flourishing here now as it was when you were here there is a great indifference on the part of the people in regard to it and it seems almost impossible to get any of them to come out to our meetings or to investigate the principles in any way I 1 have had bad the pleasure of baptizing quite a number since I 1 have been here and I 1 received a letter this morning from a little village about miles from this place stating that there were six of them wishing baptism and requesting me to come over and attend to it these I 1 may add have never heard the gospel from any one except myself they also intend emigrating in the spring and they have the means to do so in dependant of the church times tima are very hard here now and the saints are very poor so that few will be able to emigrate without assistance from home and I 1 need not say that the news of the effort which is bet ing log made at home for the gathering of 1 the saidea sain ts from this thia country is hailed by them with unspeakable joy for it is plainly evident to all the judgments of an offended god are shortly to be poured out upon this devoted nation and it is my firm conviction that the little band of faithful latter day saints who still remain in this land are En glands only safeguard for if the people who were destroyed on account of their wickedness in the cities of the plains were living in these days they would blush to see the scenes of wickedness which are daily and nightly enacted in the city of manchester and I 1 have often shuddered and felt my blood run cold in my veins when I 1 have been forced to witness these thesa sights at these times I 1 have thought how different it is in our peaceful and happy valleys and have prayed god that the effects of modern civilization 2 might never ba b feltin felt feit in our mountain home the ministers statesmen and people can all see the destruction which inevitably awaits them yet they still persist in fighting against gods kinga kingdom om and are willing to use any means to avert their doom provided the almighty Is left entirely out of the question at the same time they are praying for the coming of af the savior and one denomination has gone so far as to get out a written petition to that effect and it has already obtained over signatures this thia is read and offered up in their assemblies I 1 cannot imagine their object in wanting him to come without they wish to try if they tiey can again crucify him the feniane fontans are less troublesome just now than they have been for fur some time though they continue kohold their midnight drills dinall parts of r the countr country y yesterday at the assize court in this his city two more of them received sentence of death for the shooting of sergeant brett last fall in the hyde road riot three having already been hung for the ame offense onie ofie nse there is a great feeling of enmity ex sting at the present time in this country between the catholics and protestants and serious riots between them are very prevalent this is caused ver very y probably by the who have peen been been arrested being all catholics and in in my opinion the words fenian and roman catholic are nearly synonymous bemid besides iea lea the glaring signs of war and contention both from without and within the prospects famine of are horribly apparent all these combine to pre presage salle sarle for england a dark and stormy future which her wise men confess their inability to prevent verily the wisdom of her wise men has perished and the understanding of her prudent has been hid yet while we contemplate the downfall of nations we can look with pride annjoy and joy to that growing power in the west which will continue to spread and increase until all other powers must lost yield in subjection to its righteous rule happy are they who enlist under its banner and remain steadfast in the cause for to them shall be given the vIctor victorious lous ious crown may the honest hearted from nii nil all ail nations nation she be gathered to the fold of christ before destruct destruction loh lob codeso comes is my continued desire and prayer As I 1 have got to the end of my paper 3 I 1 will close for the present praying god to bless you in all your labors your affectionate son ALONZO E HYDE slabs made of disintegrated cane in combination with clay rosin rosl n I 1 size and other
