SESSION it had been resolved by both branches of the territorial legislature aa as we were informed by lissome koine kolne of 0 the members on the morn ing of friday the last day of the session td 16 dispose dispute of all the business upon their respect tive tables at an early hour hoar in the day and be ready for the closing ceremonies before even ing a resolution they were not able with all their expertness expert ness nesa in disposing of matters to ta carry out and an evening session became inevitable having a little leisure that evening we wi thought it not improper to beair to the state house and witness the dissolution of one of the most remarkable remar kable and notable legislative bodies which ever convened on oil this contine continent nl i famed not only for the faithfulness and diligence of the members but for tt air patience and forbearance under the most vexing and irritating circumstances that ever su surrounded rr bounded a lawmaking law making department our to th legislative halls on that evening will not sion soon boon be for otte n we first went into the council chamber which certainly did not present a very gorgeous bous appearance the desks and chairs occupied ju pied pled by the councilors councillors Counci lors lora were of the most plain prim tive order imaginable no had been employed to make them showy easy and comfortable the tables of pf the president and secretaries were not costly nor elegant and it if the other officers had been provided with ch lra ira they were then unoccupied the walls of the nail nali were bare and unadorned with the exception of a national banner the old flir fiig 13 which was wag spread out and nailed to the he wall ivall behind the presidents chair there were only 11 gite five e candles barni barning rg three of them on the secretaries ta table tabie bie ble to which the president had to repair whenever he read or signed a document the hire fire in the acoves had bad nearly ceased to burn for the want of fu fuel fuei el in fine the whole scene strongly remi mi ded us of the condition of our odice orice happy country in this its hour of darkness and impending or threatened dissolution notwithstanding the general gloom which prevailed the members were doing their 1 uta ura ut r most to clear the table the messenger wai kept moving brisk briskly I 1 y and the decre secretary tary and assistant secretary were plying a their pens with great grat celerity after having surveyed the hall and witnessed the scene till near its clo cio closeme close we retired As we left the chamber a view of the stars and stripes seen sern by the glimmering dight light as they were fastened to the wall served berged dio vio to strengthen sur ur faith that they w 11 survive the storm and proudly p float after those who n ho dishonor them shall have lave passed away I 1 oi ie leti letl tiring ring froin the council chamber we went into the representatives hall hill where there was more artificial light as there were more candes burning but otherwise there w was wan as a great similarity in the thi general ap appearance par of things as compared with what had been witnessed in the upper house we lye had been seated but a few minutes before one of the members rose and inquired why the firem in was not more attentive to his duties the reply was that there was no fuel although t there was considerable unfinished business on the table as arwe we inferred from the remarks of some of the members a motion to immediately dissolve prevailed the journal was read and at eevea minutes to eight 11 b by v our time the chaplain ws wis informed by thet tha speaker that his bis services ber vices were then in order the ilo ho orabie members ant and all present to their feet and an invocation cofone of one ohe irli minutia duration terminated the session the ile counci courcy coun Cour cl dissolved a few minutes after leavi leaving Dg as wn vi learned considerable business on their table As they retired not a murmur nor a c gorr forr orr pa plaint aint escaped from the lips ct of any one all seemed to be jovial and from what was seis sels seu sen and heard we wb were unable to determine whether the so ably a apparent a rent was the fault of the Secret secretary ary dry of the ye territory or the choice of those model S alons from the commendatory resolutions that were pase 4 we are inclined to the belief that the frugality which characterized the twelfth annual session was mutual between the members and the secretary upon the principle that fhe the thee derai deral government had need of all tilt the means i eana which could be saved from ampro B or be otherwise obtained to carry on the war ac |
