Show Page 6 Thursday, March 30, 1061 THE VALLEY VIEW NEWS Former Utahn To Lecture at UofU March 28 Anything Goes... by ROLF W. KAY "There never was a product made, This truth you must confess. That some guy hasnt made it worse. And sold his junk for less. I heard this little poem many many years ago and for some reason Ive never forgotten it But why is it that I keep trying to have a buck and keep getting stuck? Youd think that after a while a guy would get smart and come to the realization that you get what you pay for. The last place I got stcuk, and I hope its the last, is when I 'bought phonograph record in a store.T grocery this When planjfe?' was first publi-cizeit sounded d, like a real good deal. The first couple of records were fine but af-ter that I didnt know if I was getting a phonograph record ora frozen waffle, dont know who puts these records out and frankly right now I couldnt care less. But I know one thing; in the future, Im going to buy my records in a music store. Isnt it stamge that you can go to a grocery store nowadays and buy phonograph records, books, garden hose, barrieres, and what have you. You ca ngo in a drug store and buy bicycles, fertilizers, frying pans, electric fans, step ladders and other various and sundry items. Im sure that if this keeps up well soon be able to buy hamburger and baloney in the furniture stores. It reminds me of the story of the guy that walked in the drug store and couldnt find the aspirin. He finally asked the clerk, Dont you carry any drugs in here? The clerk misunderstood him and said, A former Utahn, Dr. O. Meredith Rugs, you bet we have them, theres some nice 9xl2s in the back. I wonder what started this frantic grab for the consumer dollar that ended up with every body stepping on every body elses toes. I could see where a hundred years ago the general store had to carry everything under the sun but theres no excuse for it now. With the large shopping centers every few miles and everyone driving a car it seems to me that the merchants should carry only those things which they are qualified to sell. Theres nothing more discouraging than going into a store that carries so many diversified items that none of the clerks know the first thing about their products.
