Anything Someone once said that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. From where I sit, so is authority. Give a guy a little authority and he plays it for all its worth. Little men with little jobs. Immature men that think a little authority gives them the right to treat people like dirt. For instance, the other day I went to the office a little early and got on the elevator. Another idiot with a little authority. Most bus drivers that Ive had any dealings with make Hitler look like a piker. And this is the one that takes the prize. A few days ago, on the way home, I approached a spot in the road where they were evidently putting in a sewer. A big bulldozer was busily pushing the dirt back in the excavation. As you know, this means going ahead and pushing the dirt in the hole and then backing up to get ready to push another load in. I stopped the car until ihe bulldozer had finished moving a pile of dirt and then when the road was clear (I thought) I proceeded on my way. The bulldozer operator saw me and started to back up. Using what I thought was good judgment, I started to back up also. I gave him a clear path but he kept coming back until I touched bumpers with the car behind me. He finally stopped and started his forward journey again. Once again, I tried to get out of his way and once again he pushed me back. While I was having a fit, he was making like Mussolini. I finally got out of his way but it was then and there that I became convinced that if you give a man a little authority hes going to play it to the hilt. And the strange part of it is that the exact reverse is true with a man that has a lot of authority delegated to him. This is usually the type of man that will go out of his way to be fair and just in his dealings with people. Unfortunately for us, there are too many of these tyranncal bus drivers, elevator operators, and bulldozer operators around. It wouldnt be so bad if they stayed in these unimportant jobs, but its people like this that become the Fidel Castros and throw the whole world in a dither. man was there but after a serious look at his watch he proceeds to inform me that the elevator will not operate for another ten minutes. Someone, sometime gave him the word that the elevators were to start running at exactly seven thirty. This was his chance to flaunt his authority and he made the most of it. 'Now he was no longer a mere elevator operator. All of a sudden he elevated himself to the captain of this seemingly guided missile. Had I argued with him I am sure he would have made a federal case out of it, so up the stairs I walked. Ive never seen a happier person than that elevator pilot, and youve never seen a person more tired, or angry than yours truly. And Im sure this has happened to you.
