IIOT DOG AND CHEESE ANYTHING GOES The English people repuditly have a strange sense of humor. Some even say that they have no sense of humor at all. Be that as it may, heres a story that is typical of what make English people laugh. Youve all heard of the English type clubs for men. The same old men sit in the same old chairs in the same old club day after day, month after month, and year after year. No one talks above a whisper and if any one clears their throat a little too loud it is just cause for immediate dismissal. Rustling a newspaper or wearing shoes that squeek is highly frowned upon. In this particular club everything went along very quietly all week long but being human, the members lived it up on Saturday nights. This living it up consisted solely of each member taking turns in telling jokes for the rest of the members. The speaker would tell two or three stories and the rest of the members would laugh up a storm. The only trouble was the same jokes were told over and over again and no new ones were ever added. But this didnt dismay the club members. They would laugh just as hard the twentieth time they heard the joke as they did when it was first introduced. Then one of the members got a bright idea. Inasmuch as every one knew the stories verbatim why take all that valuable time in telling the story from beginning to end. He suggested that some one catalog all the jokes by number and write them down. All the members would memorize the jokes and then the speaker would merely mention a cer W. Kay tain number. The members would recognize it as a certain story and laugh at it just as if it were told in its entirety. The first Saturday night it was put to the test. The speaker arose and said, Number 23. The audience howled. He then said, Number 48. Once again the laughter filled the club room. He then told the best joke of all, Number 12. The audience was fit to be tied. It was a perfect evening. The next Saturday night another speaker had the floor. He arose and said Number 16. The audience barely snickered. He thought a minute and then said, Number 52. The audience sat silent. He concentrated for a minute and said Number 46. He knew this was the best joke in the book, but it left the audience cold. Later her ran into the previous weeks joke teller. He said to him, I dont understand it, I told tonight were every bit as good as the ones you told last Saturday night. Yet they roared at your stories but mine went over like a lead balloon. Lets face it, came the reply, some people can tell jokes and some cant. Incidentally, Joke Number 46 was the one about the three slightly deaf Englishmen that were walking along the road when they approached a small town. The first Englishman said, Is this Wembly? To which the second Englishman said, No, its Thursday. So am I, commented the third Englishman, Lets stop for a drink. the-joke- users of Natural Gas Heat --- to l Your heating equipment should be CHECKED and PREPARED TOASTIES 1 1 By Rolf IMPORTAN- T- for winter operation NOW 2 Yt Yt Yi Page 5 cups spread pound sharp Cheddar cheese pound hot dogs, cooked cup catsup ! egg tablespoon pickle relish teaspoons prepared mustard Put cheese and hot dogs through a food grinder, using a medium coarse blade.
