Show ids r 03 Number 18 Salt Lake County, Utah, Thursday, April 30, 1959 Volume V ct" ' ' V Ary.vf.-y- The Cyprus High School Swim club The C- Maids are practicing for their water show to be an organization affiliated with and sponsored by the Cyprus High School, will present their annual water show Thursday April 30th at the Cyprus High School swimming pool. Two performances will be given, at 6:30 p.m. and at 8 p.m. Admission is 25 cents for children and 35 cents for adults. Advisors for the swim group are A1 Zamsky and Erma Beck. The club was organized in the fall of 1956 under the direction of Beth Clawson, a faculty member at that time. She directed the group for a period of two years. The purpose of the group is to develop physical, mental and social standards of the girls and to develop proper timing and coordination of the students. The club has two jobs to complete during the year. First to referee the swim meets, of which there were 10 this The presented Thursday, April 30th, at the Cyprus High School pool in Magna. year, and second to put on a water show as a final project for the year. The students may also enter competitive swimming if they so desire. The club elects its own officers each year after the election of the school officers takes place. The advisory board consists of club officers and the faculty advisor. The members must maintain a C average and remain active, and obey all rules. The girls assist the school mens swim team as needed ' during the year also. . The program this year will be presented with the aid of revolving colored lights, that will intensify the beauty of the costumes and greatly add to the island atmosphere. The group of thirty girls, are new in of which twenty-tw- o the club this year, will demonstrate island rituals, diving, sunsets, tides of the ocean and other activities of the islands and of the people. For an evening of enjoyable en- tertainment, attend the VISITING production of SOUTH PACIFIC. Music Festival Highlights School Activities Kearns Jr. High School students will participate in a district wide music festival to be held tonight (Thursday), at 8 p.m., at the Granger High School. Other participants in this area include: Brock-banGranite and Valley Jr. High schools. On May 8, a Music Festival will be held by the Kearns Jr. High School at 8 p.m., in the auditorium of the school and all residents are invited to attend. k, The students that attend the Teen Record Hop enjoy an evening of dancing under supervision. Teen Record Hop Held Fridav af C - Cenfer A Teen Record Hop has been organized for the teenagers of Kearns and the surrounding areas. It is held every Friday evening at the Kearns Community Center from 8 to 1 1 p.m. Admission is 50 cents. It was first started on January 29th of this year, under the direction of Mr. Vance Conder, of Murray. A group of a dozen students held a Poster Party to compose anposter and advertisements The the purpose of Hop. nouncing the club is to give students good healthful activities under .direction and supervision. The musical entertainment is largely furnished by record, but students with musical talents are encouraged to participate on the program. There are Hop rules that the patrons must abide by: There is no smoking, drinking, or roughness, and the girls are not allowed to wear slacks or levis. The first officers were appointed to get the Hop started, but the group will elect their own officers annually. PTA Chooses New Officers of West Kearns The West Kearns held their PTA meeting, Monday April 20th at the West Kearns School, at which time new officers for the coming year were elected. Mrs. Lois Westenskow was elected president. 1st vice is Mrs. Jennie Speakes and Mr. Max Jackman, school principal, will serve as 2nd vice. Mrs. Helen Liston is the new 3rd vice. The treasurer elected is Mrs. Beverly Critchfield and the secretary is Mrs. Rhoda Clarkson. The program was conducted by Mrs. Pearl Pace. A film from the Civil Defense Dept, was shown on Facts About Fall Out. After which, Mr. Burbridge from the Civil Defense Dept, gave a discus-nofor future emergency use. The combined fifth grades provided musical entertainment by featuring songs and dances of western folk ballads. Patriotic songs of the w branches of the armed forces were also sang and very well presented. Dr. Burton F. Brasher, a member of the Granite School Board,, and guest speaker, talked on the coming School Bond election. The out come of the voting by the public will determine whether or not the children will have split sessions or all day classes. The future of the children depends on the outcome of the voting. The annual YWCA water show will be presented May with 1-- 2, two performances each evening at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The theme of the exhibition is based on an ancient story entitled: The Wrath of Waruma, God of the Sea. Under the supervision of Mrs. Sylvia Durrant, director of health and education at the YWCA, who is assisted by Mrs. M. H. Doelle, some two hundred and fifty adults, teenagers and children will participate. This program is not just an exhibition of swimming skills, but is also concerned with art, drama and music and will feature group as well as solo numbers. president, and Darlene Conder, vice president. An entertainment committee is in the planning. A dance contest is held every Friday evening and prizes are given. The admission fee supplies the prizes and equipment for entertain- ment. The Record Hop is also receiving the cooperation of the local merchants. The service stations, cleaning establishments, Wool-worth- s, and other various places of business are giving merchandise certificates which are used as prizes and drawings. Pictures are taken by various members of the group and displayed on a bulletin board for the patrons to observe at their leisure. The Teen Record Hop is a good place for the teenagers to enjoy the company of their friends and dancing, under supervision. League Drill Team Will Have Photographs Taken ATTENTION LEAGUETTES All members of the Kearns National Little League Drill Team are requested to be at the West Kearns School, Saturday May 2nd, at 1 p.m. to have photos of the Drill team taken in full uniform. Some who have ordered their boots and do not have them yet wear white shoes if possible. ,i The Kearns National Little League is going to present the ball f ; team that had the most members at the Little League Dance Friday April 24th, with a warm-u- p jacket for their pitcher. As it happened two teams tied, and so the jacket will go to the pitcher of the Philjie and the Braves, both major teams., ; It was very gratifying to see; so many parents attend the Little League Dance. Everyone benefits from family unity in all activities, ir k |
