Show ACCOUNT OF H L EDWARDS DEATH I 1 0 iel 5 x ak t 14 N tl A I 1 J 0 M IN the following Is et a full account ot of mr air edwards death as chronicled lu in the humboldt star ed death from suffocation lit in a mine shaft near Gold banks forty miles south of winnemucca was the horrible fate of 11 II L edwards a prominent salt lake lahe mining man and 0 A gi gillett ilett of chatey chafey w whose hose bodies were discovered and brot to winnemucca yesterday by J A and adam schell ranchmen ranchman ranch men who live in that last week edwards and gillett started development work on claims claim 3 about four miles southwest ot of mud springs where they camped driving each morning to the property adam schell who happened to be in the vicinity of the springs monday anotle noticed one of the horses belonging to edwards and gillett wandering about the place As the animal was drag ing a broken halter rope schell caught the horse and commenced to investigate finding that the men were absent and the other horse and wagon evere were not in sight ampre ng that was w wrong fong lie immediately started for the mine where he found the other horse tied to the wagon where it had evidently stood for several days as there were no indications of anyone any one having been there that day clay to care for him NIT mr schell then went to the shaft and going down the ladder was horrified to find the bodies of edwards at in death lie ile then proceeded to ills his brothers ranch across the valley and with a number of other men from Gold banks they returned to the mine and raised the bodies from the shaft the bodies were brought to winnemucca in fit a wagon and taken to the undertaking parlors ot of alter alter word was sent to mrs gillett at chafey and she arrived yesterday to take charge 0 of her husbands remains A telegram was sent to geo clark a partner of edwards lu in the property and lie he arrived from reno this morning relatives at salt lale lake were notified and a brother will arrive arlve this evening to take charge of edwards remains yesterday afternoon coroner robbins impaneled im paneled a jury composed of 0 joseph lav lavoy oy W 7 J sterling C A van Voll tenberg ed brown wm I 1 J B corbell corbeil and C W case which after viewing the bodies and inquiring into the cause of 0 the death of the men tendered rendered the following verdict we find that the de decease ceasel it II L edwards aged about 30 years was a native ot of utah that deceased 0 A gillett aged about 45 years was a native of america that they came to their death near licar Gold banks huni bolt county bounty nevada on july 1909 by being suffocated by foul gases at the bottom of a mining shaft it was vas brought out at the inquest that edwards and gillett had gone to tile the mine friday morning and after firing a round of holes sat sal down and had their dinner near where the wagon was standing presumably after finishing the meal they le ie work gillett going down 1 awn the shaft where lie he was overcome by the poisoning gases caused by the powder smoke edwards after lulling finding that something was wrong with his baitner pait vait ner evidently climbed clown the ladder and in fit attempting to raise gillett became asphyxiated asphyxia ted and tell fell across the pr prostrate body of gillett that being the position in which the bodies were found both men were well known at this place and at it chafey where gillett continued on page four ACCOUNT OF EDWARDS DEATH continued from first page and his wife had charge of a hotel gillett was president eilt of the chatey chafey lodge of eagles and is well spoken of by everybody that knew win hini edwards came front from salt la lake he city and had been in this vicinity tor for some time following mining as a vocation he wasa was a man of excellent habits a and nd had many friends hei here humbolt nevada star |
