abou t 6 50 for the past seven weeks aunt mary mar as she was affect affectionately 1 0 r t a t e known has been sorely afflicted having met with an ail accident on the afternoon ot of june 2 while attempting to get into a buggy to go out and administer to the sick which resulted in the breaking of her left hip and wrist sad indeed it is that such a noble woman and one who has drunk tree reely from the cup of sorrow during her earthly life should be called hence under such conditions but aunt marys nature was one of those which says not mine but thy will be done in every ciery experience of life she was the personification of 0 patience anti and kind solicitude always forgetting herself in the anxiety for the comfort of others and even in her last painful moments when she was unable to turn over in bed without being assisted and when every eiery move made her body rack with pain she did not complain but told those around her that she knew they would not hurt her if 1 they could help it the word of 0 MOTHER seems to fit aunt marys alaras character perfectly tor for I 1 she was a mother not only to her own offspring but to every child w who ho had no mother and her unselfish spirit prompted her to take many a 1 child to her breast and it which had been deprived of its parent upon one occasion lia in life when her husbands first wife passed into the other life ko leaving two small children one ot of which was ft a nurs ing babe aunt mary weaned her babe who Is now mrs ray evans evana and took the little motherless suckling 11 11 g to her bosom and ana reared it as her own that babe is now grown to manhood and Is edward wright of ogden such traits of character can only be possessed by the godlike and truly she was one of that kind hind I 1 besides bearing 12 children of her own she cared for for and reared 4 ot of her husbands first wife who died when they were young two of another cifes and julius the son ot of bishop brigham wright whose mother died when he was an infant nineteen children in all and every one of them looks upon her and think of her as mother blessing her memory and thanking god for such a friend what better thing could be said 0 of a woman than th that at she had been as good as any real mother could have been and now that she has gone the world had lost much ol of its charm that testimony was borne by one or of those whom she reared while his voice choked with emotion and the tears of sadness trickled down ills his cheeks 1 I and not no only tonly her immediate family have shared in the blessings which she so generously scattered about but her neighbors and friends and the needy who came within her reach each and all were assisted by her in bearing lifes burdens and were inspired by her sublime faith truly has the world been made the better tor for her having lived in it and when that time comes when the dead are called forth there will be a mighty host that will rise up and call her blessed mary J neeley was as born october ath 1833 in vermillion county ill just a few miles from danville early in life she was taught the principles ot of the gospel and when 8 years of age was baptized a dembei of the church for a cumber ot oi years the family lived in nauvoo and mary became intimately acquainted with the prophet joseph smith she was 11 years of age when he was martyred marty red and never forgot the scenes scenes of sorrow that shook that beautiful city when the dead leaders were brought home it was a delight for her to sit and tell ot of these times and bear testimony to the purity of character ot of the men who were killed to seal theli theia testimony with their blood and she could relate experience after experience of those days ot of trial and suffering two years atter after the death of the prophet and his brother the family crossed the river to the iowa side where they remained until the year 1850 when they came on to utah in 1851 mary was married to jonathan C wright glit the date being feb aith neith her husband she lived in fit cottonwood until 1854 her first child was born and died at this place and in 54 she removed to brigham Brig luni city being among the first families to locate here the family lived in the old tort fort and her husband hubband assisted to build the two first houses erected in Br brigham ighani city in those days the city was not lot as beautiful as it is now anil preserved a calm faith and assurance that all would be well in the end twenty five years ago her sons lorenzo and seth were killed by indians down in arizona both were married fifteen years ngo ago alotti mortimer another son died utter after a very brief illness he was not married but was a grown man ten years ago cornelius met a tragic death by drowning in a mountain stream while tending his by a freight train lie he was a brakeman and lial had 1 a family and frank aunt marys baby was suddenly called four years ago last man month brial by appendicitis after a very brief ef illness lie he too left a wife and several small children the sad part of at it all Is that after suffering so much in seeing her children taken from her aunt mary was not permitted to pass away naturally but her death was directly due to the accident with which she met seven weeks ago her spiritual part was not neglected in the trying scenes 0 of life and she was a zealous worker in the city from its beginning was one ot of the eight original teachers chosen in the relief society when it was organized here on may 12 1868 there then tel ng but one left mrs airs ausaw susannah P boothe in 1874 she became a co counselor 11 to president I 1 lar riel snow in the relief society and in 1890 wal wai selected as one of the counselors to olivia in the stake presidency of the relief society and occupied that position until 1998 she filled these positions with honor also acted tor for a time as counselor in the presidency of the relief society of the ath ward and later worked as a teacher never was she too tired nor too busy to administer to the comfort of the oppressed and her life shines forth as a bright example to tile the youth as well as the old tor for he her r integrity to principle was unwavering and she was faithful unto death may her rest be peaceful and may her influence spread among those who knew her that they might be imbued with the same noble qualities with which abic she was so richly endowed funeral services were held this morning at 11 in the tabernacle dr and mrs J R A whitlock formerly of this city lost their little IS 18 months old daughter dorothy last saturday evening from a combination of intestinal troubles and brain fever the little one having been ill for a number of weeks just a few minutes after the spirit of little dorothy took its light flight into the other life mrs airs whitlock gave birth ta a baby and the family was moved with a mingled spirit ot of gladness and sadness ness dorothy was a most lovable child the second oldest in the family and her place in the affections ot of her parents will ever be empty for while other children may come to blesz bless their home and will be received with gladness the memory of the little one who has gone gene before will always bring sadness to the heart the little body was brought to this city monday morning accompanied by dr whitlock mrs airs whitlock his mother rev 11 0 white and mr and mrs airs W H capwell it was interred in the cemetery berea brief service having been held at the home of dr and mrs airs whitlock in tremonton Tre monton we offer condolence to dr whitlock and family and pray our rather father in heaven to sustain them f in the hour of tribulation mrs airs whitlock and her little babe are getting along nicely |
