Show LECTURES ON phrenology HOJI on tuesday night bourne delivered the second of his series of lectures on phrenology at the adelphi theatre san francisco he said LADIES AND 1 I will resume the su subject of my discourse where I 1 left off last night I 1 proposed to you last night the rio 9 pleas which phrenology makes for your acceptance viz that the brain is the organ of the mind and emotions that the brain has a plurality of faculties and that each faculty has a ae se function and forms a di distinct port portion ion of the brain that size is the mea measure fiare of the brain other things bein being I 1 equal and that the conformation of th the I 1 I 1 skull ull determines determine almost to a certainty the character and quality of the brain in other words it is only a mete mere mapping out of the human soul contained within the brain what is phrenology it is a mental and moral science it teaches man to know himself and one in which most men are lamentably ment ably deficient it would tell each man the how bow and why of his sets acts and express to him the motive springs it will open the sweet scent of the garden of the affe affections otio name each flower of love and tell its ita dee peculiar U fragrance in a word it pictures mans soul as if on canvas and holds it up to him to look at it will there point out to him his faults and propensities and tell him how bow to curb his passions and quicken his impulses how to correct his judgment elevate his bis sentiments and perfect his bis character in a word it gives him a knowledge to harmonize himself and form a perfect man I 1 doubt not that the infantile brain braia can be entirely changed by cultivation if this be so what duties do we owe to our progeny what duties have been neglected in regard to ourselves I 1 doubt not that the infantile brain may be placed under a mental training which will change completely or at least modify the original origin characteristics which it may have received at its birth I 1 hope I 1 will not be accused of egotism ism if I 1 speak of myself in regard to a ease case which I 1 know and well know and cannot well be cheated in I 1 was a playful tive child my father was a pious minister who believed that if he spared the rod he would spoil the child my combativeness was then small now I 1 say it is well developed I 1 and I 1 am perfectly willing to enter into guy any kind of a moral fight at once phrenology teaches that whom god fore knew he predestinated there are organizations that are bom to sin and there are others that will w ill be damned as surely as I 1 stand before you the there is no doubt about that you have hare all go go to face this immutable t 6 bi 0 truth and need ao act blink it or wink it WO we have seen individuals who would lie outrageously although at the same time the truth might advance their purpose more we have seen others who would not lie at all and others who could be induced to lie or speak the truth on occasions for the salvation of these wretched mentalities who vilio must sin we want moral hospitals in which these patients may be restored res tor ed to moral mma health Ike alth and not let them run abroad and then theft when they offend ag against allis i t boole society t ta pound them to death oh a shortsighted lawyers when shall shak vengeful punishment cease to exist tremble oh man and tremble oh B society for the wretched system of education t now adopted and sustained ana am I 1 my bro brothers thees keeper say you yes thou arti must advert to another fact the mental and physical qualities of the parents are transmitted to the children it cannot be denied in our own cases that we would be gire greatly atly bene fitted if in early life our faculties had bad been sedulously cultivated the slow progress of the race towards that perfection to which it approximates approximate has been owing to the ignorance of the past on this vital ilal point phrenology po nta out significantly antly these facts an androw now its invaluable aid may be courted many persons are afraid to investigate phrenology lest its truths might conflict with their religion but said st P paul 1 94 prove 0 a all things thing and hold fast to thata that which tr it is good fod 11 the religion that conflicts with it so much the worse for that religion phrenology teaches charity and love and long suffering love is the f fulfillment of the law the propositions of phrenology that I 1 want you to understand are the brain is the organ of mind and emotion 2nd and it is constituted of faculties each separate and distinct dad 3rd size other things being equal is the measure of the brain ath the shape of the skull is the index of the shape of the brain ath the conformation of the skull defines the disposition ea especially where a simple mode of life has teen been observed i ampt accept these propositions and you are theoretical ore phrenologists it is not improper to 8 say 7 that wo we have forty two minds for that is the number of organs now in play and they all have to discharge their own duties each having its own train of feelings each performs its own part without interfering with the other except in debate in which they very often engage I 1 will now commence at the LOVING GROUP PAR excellence though every faculty m may a be said 1 d to ik be one of love for foi instance gelf self L love 0 ve love of ones of self amativeness love of women acquisitiveness love of money etc thus through the whole range man 18 is love it is his whole nature natura and god is love thus main man is said to be allied to god and he can love all that god loves the organs of social group are of the highest imbor importance these blend society together husband us and wife bif parent a t aal child brother and sister friend frien and friend they are located at the back part of the head bead the first of the is amativeness it is the great r eat bond of union between the sexes all true and fair men recognize recognise it it is the primary organ for the reproducing of the species pe cies in rude men it is coarse and it renders them vulgar and debased among true men its exercise exercise gives man a noble self sacrificing spirit and generous daring it will make him tender and gentle to woman unless he be be debased and res respectful act it gives to woman a hap happy y sparkling love and power the abuse 0 of this faculty has been the cause of more crime than any other faculty in the human brain the wretched ignorance which has hitherto prevailed must be removed and the future will say to the past Il avaunt hideous spectre the social groupe give a f fullness to the part of the bead where they are developed in man they form one fifth of the i whole brain in woman one eighth some idea of their influence on the organism of man may be inferred from this fact the faculty of I 1 UNION FOR WE is directly on top ton it causes our individual attachments when largely developed our love for our oar companion of the other sex is inviolable and when it and amativeness are large unalterable martin van buren is 0 one ne of the most extraordinary apeci deat mens of that kind ile he has been a widower for near forty years he lost his wife ir iii his early life and so strong was his hia attachment to her that he be never married again when this organ is is small there is an inclination to love lore the whole opposite sex and this brings me to the most interesting inte esting part of my lecture to night I 1 recently made an examination of a head in which the organ of union for life was waa scarcely perceptible I 1 remarked this man loves every woman heotes he sees 11 or something to that effect I 1 afterwards learned that he was a mormon who had three wives and intended to have un ten wimm when he was able to support them on learning that I 1 reviewed the examination that I 1 had bad made and found it to be perfectly correct he ha was a most meat ener genc betic untiring business man shrewd and nd keen een with a reasonable share of the moral and religious honest asp aspiring iritic I 1 ambitious a warm friend courageous and resolute just the very kind of a man calculated to make an earnest go ahead first rate good citizen yet that man had actually three wives wives an and d intended to have ten ion more re if he could support them As far as ray my downor own organization is concer concerned cannot sympathize in such views as those nor can I 1 I 1 tolerate polygamy I 1 confess that at first the tho thought u lit bould would shook shock me but here was a case lor for investigation and one too good to be lost sight bight of here was a moral and virtuous man openly confessing to acts at which almost everybody in the civilized world revolts what is the cause ry I 1 asked MY mv self I 1 will give you the solution as 98 lows it was the best illustration of the or gan union tor for life ever eve r given I 1 and it I 1 establishes more pr perfectly fe otly its existence than any other experiment on the subject it proved unquestionably that there is is such an organ though it is not even inserted in some charts from my examination mi nation I 1 fin find that it is a truthful position that such an organ exists the religious belief of that gentleman permitted polygamy there are many here whose religious belief ie p permits ermi i a great many carious curious and extraordinary exta exa ordinary things one man believes that it is is his solemn duty to be sprinkled another to be dipped in water and that he calls baptism another that he be must take the lords supper and an another others that he must not DOC are a great many and differences among men me and all springing from reli religious ous belief well this man mans a religious belief is that he can have as many wives wives as he can honorably and justly maintain now I 1 ask but at the game me time remember that I 1 am not a dei fender of mormonism who has a right to condemn 0 or r oppose his religious belief I 1 ask you who has a right to object to your TOUT sprinkling or baptism ask yourselves yourselves each that question and do not be afraid look Looke ever verv thing right straight in the eye and right through and through and if you have gotten a good sight eight of the truth stand by it fodder or no fodder well as I 1 bal said d before it was his religious religions belief it is a duty to him to have as many wives wives as he can maintain he obeys only his feelings of duty conscience regulates all our g pod good emotions and prompts us no to duty continually I 1 I 1 crying duty duty it makes a 01 ol man look right through and to perform his duty if he be has hag got moral courage coe now what brings me here tonight to night not money that you can all swear to laughter not for fame for I 1 do not m aspire t to it n it is duty daty when this organ i is large and well developed ve it is the most beautiful ua of the or I 1 gans the mormon loves lores all women and would warry marry all the women on gods earth if he could support them laughter now I 1 say here is a man who who ma may y be set down as a good man in we the commini ty a good member of society and yet this man has three wives and eight children and he is but thirty years of age Us he is an honest man known kuoni everywhere for his 1 honesty now all these wives wives arouse ghisi this man to energy and ove give an impetus to all his actions 1 I say gay that he is a good mem 1 ber of society hp be says be has got all the qualifications to make him such there is on 1 I 1 ly le one point of difference between him and the great reat mass of his species viz the organ of f cion mon for life awas not well developed I 1 have had it in mv power to examine a I 1 geat great many mormon heads beads and I 1 certainly i found in some cases that the org organ in existed 1 As far as my acquaintance goes 0 e wi with t h the gormong mormons Mor mons mong I 1 pronounce them hg honest one t men en 11 I 1 examined hundreds of their heads to be sure I 1 found some of them rogues the women harmonize with these views views and 1 i actually prompt their husbands to get a I 1 I 1 greater number of wives their families I 1 enjoy themselves more than we do in society I 1 t I 1 have this from the testimony of t zose those who do not approve of mormonism we therefore m may y adduce this fut fact that there is cometh something ing in their organism that invites poly polygamy amy and the consequence is is that Phreno phrenology fogy invites us to a la large share 1 of charity that charity and I 1 love ove w which ri lob enables us to bear with our neighbor in an all he does and if we seriously believe that he is in the wrong to labor to remove it and by all means through kindness I 1 will here take the liberty of remarking that this people acou occupying ing the middle of this country the beM backbone bone of the continent have subdued the wilderness around them and w we e should treat them with that forbearance w which aich god himself demands and without 1 w which aich we cannot hope for mercy ourselves when we think of these people let us remember 1 that we were not appointed their judges we made not their laws and have nothing to do with them let us let them alone unless to do them good I 1 feel privileged to say that as far as I 1 know this intolerance and ad bigotry on your part is not warranted by the circumstances I 1 dr bourne then proceeded to examine the crania of two or three gentlemen and his revelations of character were perfectly satisfactory is |
