Show 1 41 I 1 1 1 1 I 1 i V EXTRACTS from the minutes of the semi annual conference f rence of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints held at 18 island of maui oct 1853 present at this conference one high priest 16 seventies 3 elde aldeia s and I 1 priest the saints gener generally are disposed to obey coune W and seek wisdom the gifts of the spirit cirit are am enjoyed in all the bran branches clies the small pox has ra raged d upon all the islands especially in honolulu frere where some thousands fell victims to 10 its ravages gem and among the number many of the saints as the I 1 report from that district will allow there has been some persecution which has tended to give impetus to the alie spread of truth and the saints greatly rejoice in the progress of the work of the lord upon these lands the first business before the conference was the necessity of printing the lie book of mormon at the earliest period it being ready for the press next wits wag discussed d the propriety of procuring a press for the use of this mission as much print ed matter is necessary for the instruction of this people 4 motioned and carried that a press and material be purchased at the earliest date motioned and carried that we take into consideration the selection of some suitable location for the gathering of the saints upon these lands agreeable to counsel received from president young As we have heretofore been abridged in it our rights in regard to schools that subject was taken up and elders johnson cannon and tanner were appointed a committee to draft a memorial to the proper authorities setting forth our grievances in regard to this matter next in order came the distributing the elders to their fields of future labor motioned arid and carried elders be appointed appo ined by this conference to preside over the dif different forent islands when elder tanner was appointed to preside over hawaii elder reddick N allred cpr side ide over maui elder H W bigler to preside ovar bahu oahu elder wm win farrar to preside over kauai motioned and carried that molokai he be a ae separate pa conference and that elder woodbury woodbur y preside over sid s a aid id island elders karren rice snider lawson keeler a and nd lynn were appointed to hawaii elder eidar mcbride and priest wolverton to kanwai elders hammond and R A allred to M vil elder elaf r green to molokai elder hawkins to oahu bahu elder winchester to honolulu to labor as the presidency may mav direct motioned and carried that this conference highly approve of the labors of elder johnson for the last six months in honolulu and that we assign that place as the field of his future labors labor when not engaged eng aged elsewhere in the business of the committees mit tees twenty two native elders and priests were appointed to travel in conjunction conj with the alie foreign eldors elders motioned and carried that all remaining native officers be subject Jeet to a call of the presidency of their respective conferences conference adjourned until the ath lust in order to meet with the native in conference to lay before them the business already transacted which was joyfully received and heartily concurred in by a congregation of some fifteen hundred bundred souls who listened with deep interest to all the teachings on the occasion some thirty were baptized and twenty two elders twenty nine priests pricita pric sta sixteen teachers and twelve deacons were ordained during conference considering the extreme poverty of the native sains a laudable zeal was manifested by them and a disposition to sustain the committee in procuring and establishing a press for tits printing the book of mormon and other publications aud and a general feeling to gather out from the surrounding influences to some separate location seemed universal among them elder woodbury was appointed to prepare a solee election tion of hymns adapted to our form of worship and other elders acquainted with the native language be employed in translating as the presidency de deem proper motioned and carried that conference be adjourned until april ath 1854 at a place the president and his counse counsel 1 I may designate F fifty efty three branches numbering I 1 high arif priest st 16 seventies 29 elders 72 priests esto teachers I 1 deacons died 62 ent oft off 1927 baptized since last conference tot hotl 1 PHILIP B LEWIS prest JOH E B clerk |
