Show THE TEN commandments OF APPLE GROWING that the lie growing of winter apples will soon become a business of immense proportions in the state of utah there can be no doubt in tile the minds of those who have given the subject a little thought no state slate in n the union has better soil or climate all that seems to be lacking is intelligence and veil nell directed et ef lorts I 1 am liere here reminded of a circumstance cum stance that happened sonic some years A young man whose business had been arid farming attended a horticultural meeting NIi eie an all enthusiastic and successful apple grower was showing in glowing colors the immense profits obtained it was shown hown s that one acie of apples produced more net profit than forty acres in dry do land wheat HI young friend became suddenly converted and at the close of the speech asked this question what does it take to become a successful apple grower the answer was only two things the selection of the right kind ot of trees and planting them in the right place note the young mans statement well it if that s all count me with the apple growers from now on the young man immediately secured water to irrigate part of his ii iid id farm and the next day chanced to meet the ever presed and accommodating mo dating tree peddler always able and willing to supply the tion non is as to the he right kind of trees to this particular kind hind of customer our farmer friend was easily converted by showing him blin highly colored pictures of new varieties that the ight kind of trees for him to plant were the very rarest and most costly I 1 hiees I 1 ees accordingly the order was placed and the trees planted on land that had bad been farmed fifteen years to wheat very slovenly ploughed sloughed hed once in two or three years and volunteer wheat and weeds raised between times our farmer friend having had no experience in horticultural crops desired to plant wheat between bet veen the ibe tree rows the first two years in the meantime be had learned in some way that it was a good idea to cut back the new growth on apple trees to make the trunks stocky being pressed for time lie he decided to do this trimming irig at the same time that lie he harvested the wheat so tor for two years the harvesting and pruning was done with a header for the next two years nothing was do done with tills this orchard except to irrigate it About this time our farmer fanner friend chanced to attend it a farmers institute meeting held in his town where a very learned professor from the agricultural ri college was lecturing on the benefits of oe pruning believing that its his orchard needed pruning and knowing that lie he knew nothing about the business himself lie he employed his neighbor a vegetable truck raiser to do his pruning with one halt half to three fourth and in some cases seven eighths of the entire top of the trees cut oft off I 1 am free to confess that it was tile the worst looking apple orchard I 1 ever saw this picture is not overdrawn but is true to lifland ife life and it is such examples as this that repaid the development of the apple industry in our state for fear that the present issue of rocky mountain farming will present only the bright side of the bortl cultural question and will cause sonic some uninformed people to jump julip into the business is my iny reason for giving the above example arid and formulating forill the following ten cogmond ments for apple growers 1 thou shall only after due deliberation and much study and le ie search decide to plant apples at all 2 thou shall make sure that thy soil is well adapted and property pio perly drained and that the climate is also favorable for the production pio plo of perfect fruit before embarking in this business 3 thou shall learn much about the diseases of fruit trees such as crown gall wool wooly aphis alibis hair hairy root etc so thou canet detect these diseases thyself before planting i i 4 thau than plant only two or three standard varieties best adapted to grow in thy neighborhood 5 thou shall in selecting varieties also bear in mind that the best selling apples are the best to grow even if they do not suit thy palate as yell well C G thou under no circumstances be influenced by the tree agents beautifully colored plates or samples of rare varieties shown in glass bottles 7 thou in the purchase of thy nursery stock buy from froin reliable home nurserymen nurseryman nursery men as it 1 is 13 3 well known that thy state Is at the present time the dumping ground tor for worthless nursery stock from abroad S thou shall plant apple trees on land that has been thoroughly pr prepared by sub subs soiling and that has been used for growing potatoes or sugar beets or home bome other hoed crop tor for one or two bears ears 9 thou shall also remember that an average apple crop takes out as much fertility from thy soil as do wheat crops hence bence thou must lie be prepared to supply fertility in order to bo be successful 10 thou shall give thy trees ample room thorough cultivation and at a all 11 times keep heep them free from disease of all kinds or success will not perch upon thy housetop As we are now living in the last dispensation I 1 take the liberty of adding an eleventh commandment 11 thou heed well what thou read lead in the present issue ot of rocky mountain farming faiming about I 1 the seedless apple there is good reason tor for believing that it Is a delusion and a snare therefore thou should st not be induced to plant a commercial orchard of tills this variety nor even to experiment with it billave we not our uncle sams experiment peri ment station in our midst for that purpose W S li allsen in rocky mountain farming |
