Mr. Shaw is an advanced tecTilden with a definite feeling for his piano and the music he pro- duces. He is not a showman with many flourishes but a ' sound performer, whose motion Is centered in a pair of amazing hands. Probably stemming from his two-piaplaying is the care which Mr. Shaw gives the var. Jou' works he performs. He inventions of turned two-pa- rt - Bach into interesting concert pieces and went further into popular student offerings with the Mozart C. Major Sonata and the Moonlight Sonata of Beethoven, giving the final movement of the latter .work particularly magnificent treatment: Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody- displayed well the breadth of the pianist's production, while Chopin, Mendelssohn, Grilles, Lecuona and Gould further marked his versatility. His encores included the Liszt transcription of the Liebesand tod from Wagner's "Tristan ' ' Isolde," Debussy's Claire de 'Prelude of Lune, the Gershwin, Rimsky - Korsakoffs "Flight of the Bumble-beelan- d more boogie-woog- ie after the , style of Morton Gould. Mr. Shaw ' definitely has a flare for boogie pianistics, which, as he plays it, certainly has as much or more to offer than much of the "classic" keyboard work written in the modem idiom. ,'' . . : , , I ' ' - : ' i ,, , it , :'' ' ' g 1 - ! ,. U t a h. teachers' retirement funds cannetbe distributed to teachers for services rendered in any church school, it was held today by Attorney General Grover A. Giles. Mr, Giles' opinion came in answer to a question of Teachers'. Retirement Boar as to whether er not, under the 1945 amendment to the teacher retirement law, it would be gal to permit individuals who rendered. service in schools in the state to re-- , ceive prior service. credit for such service.. Written by C. N. Otteson, assistant attorney general, the opinion points out that the 1945 amendment enlarged the definition of a teacher to include: "persons who taught in schools of this state whose credits were approved by the University of Utah or the Utah State Agri- cultural College or the State Board of Education and who became contributing members of retirement the state teachers system prior to July 31, 1938." Wives designed to aid former teachers in some junior colleges taken over by the state. No Gratuity Intended "There is nothing in this -1945 the amendment to,- - show-tha- t .that amend- -. legislature intended ment to be' a - gratuity,' the opinion states, :"and in my opinion. neither the 'legislature nor the promoters of the amendment intended it to be such. On the contrary; said 1943 amendment has been made part of the Utah Teachers' Retirement Act, subject thereof and all the state laws further. pertaining thereto. For Service To State "Our Utah Supreme Court and has held that the benefits e rights of the teachers-under-thUtah retirement act are vested rights, that they became such that-th- ey were due to the-faearned for services rendered to the state. "This argument emphasizes that teachers ',.. retirement benefits are given for services rendered. 'And. for the reasons which I already hive given, 1, again, give it as my opinion, that the teachers' retirement funds,, being public fundso could not be given or distributed to teachers for services which they 3nay have rendered in any church school.- Such :funds could- only be paid out for services rendered hi state schdols." -- CI . . . . t. . e ed e. , . i 7 ' , ' . , 0 - I I , ' ',. , ., ' f i e. , , , . 1 , ., i 0 - 10.1, - r , , . . - -- - PN :1LN :, ', z l' - . - CALIFORNIA CLASSIC , ' - , . . -- : . , , , , ,, ... . - , - 1 Tailorid with the famous , - - , ' , - - - - -- skirt, beautiful stud buttons in front and on cuffs.
