Show 1 Personal Effort Good Waiting - , ' , End By Merry le Stanley Rukeyser It's a mistake to for the duration efforts suspend to achieve .., personal success. In every phase of lifein school, in the army, in business and in the professionsachieve- ment is heightened by a proper adjustment of the individual to , his environment. Today's buddies in the artily may become business associates offering opportunity forD advancement after the war, Following World ar I. many veterans made las g business associa- tions wit??' men who 'impressed them in the armed services. From the cradle to the grave, the individual is being observed and judged, and it's wrong not to be aware of the fact It's a fallacy to postpone effort tintill you're in a better spot.' Every mans accomplishment in the job in hand, however menial, is his passport to better things. The first rate man knows how to put the imprint of excellence on everything he touches. , These thoughts came to mind as I pondered the remarks which Lieutenant General William S. Knudsen, former president of General Motors Corporation, recently made to 130 graduates of the G. M. Institute at Flint, Mich. gam The institute -. traihs men for supervisory jobsGeneral Kritisitrir-It-- t the bus, inessman who went down to Washington before' Pearl Harbor to organize American industry for its wartime role. One of his early accomplishments was to remove the barrier to construct . ing war plants by inducing Con. gress,to authorize accelerated de. preciation of such projects. Mr. Knudsen was moved out of his civilian job of generalissimo of war production shortly after his estimates of output in 1942 proved to be mope "pessimistic" than the guessts of academic statisticians in the employ of government. When the year was over, actual production close to Mr. Knudsen's forecast. Talking to young men, General Knudsen gave some fatherly advice, which it seems to me deserves a wider audience. "We are going to win this war," he said. "I have no doubt of our factories and our army and navy having the ability to do the Job. "A lways remember to be yourself. Think, independently and weigh whatever suggestions are made for your particular ' work. "Experience is knowing a lot of things you shouldn't do. "A one.man band never gets very far up the ladder. Learn to toot one trumpet and toot It awfully good. "If you hays courage you have twice the chance to win that you otherwise have. "Learn to take a little bit from the other fellow to see what he's got. That is called tolerance. "Don't ask a man to do something that you wouldn't do if you were in his place. "If you think before you act, you can act very much more efficiently and get very much more work done. "LITO cl ea n. Fight hard. Think for yourself. - "This country of yours is free and it is always going to be free.-Tbicountry I yours and It is always going to be yours.. It is going to be an example to the rest of the world." Mr. Knudsen's rules to succeed were tried in his own career. As a young immigrant from Denmark, he started at the bottom and worked his way to the top. e Sophisticates may sneer at t h remarks, but General KITASerl'5 words have the great merit of ringing title. - Journalist Tz Visit . - - - Asked Bid. The prevailing wage fixed by the group is 60 cents per hour or 12 cents per bushel, according to Clarence D. Ashton, assistant county agent. The Japanese laborers had asked 70 cents per hour or 15 cents per bushel. Farmers pointed out they must pay a fee .of approximately 10 cents per day for each laborer from the camp to aid in the camp maintenance in addition to furnishing transportation to and from work in most cases..
