Westminsters Outdoor Recreation Program is eight years old, giving an outdoor community to students since 2007. Tiana White is the Outdoor Program director and serves e as a mentor to the participants and to the outdoor ar first-tim- trip leaders. More students are interested and willing to pay to go on trips or put the effort in to design and develop their own trip, White said. It helps to take some of the load off of us. Hannah Abbott, sophomore biology major from Idaho Falls, spent the 2014 outdoor orientation as a new student at Westminster. A year later, Abbott was one of the leaders for the packrafting trip. It was really cool to be on the flip side, Abbott said. .Last year, I came in scared and not knowing anyone, going on this trip with people I didnt know to a place I didnt know. This year, Abbott is excited to be in the position of the older kid that others go running to. Were friends because we all work at this program and were all involved in this program undeclared major from LiEdgar Auchindoss, first-ye- ar tchfield, Connecticut, spent the orientation on the packrafting trip with eight other new students. When youre out with these people that youve never met before, you kind of see that inner person and really get to know them, Auchindoss said. You dont have your phones as a distraction or anything. Youre in nature. All you have for entertainment is the people around you. Abbott, one of the trip leaders, said that its so important having that small comfort with someone right before school starts when youre a new student. I feel like youre that much more likely to succeed in classes and just be comfortable doing your own thing and getting involved in the school in other ways, Abbott said. You will also enjoy a year-rou- nd stream. Living in Salt Lake offers unparalleled outdoor activities. Hiking for the novice to the experienced is right at your doorstep. Within' 30 minutes, you can find popular hikes with varying levels of difficulty, from the Avenues to Little Cottonwood Canyon. Depending on the time you have, there is a hike for everyone. Ensign Peak is located behind the Salt Lake Capitol Building. This is an enjoyable hike for most anyone. It offers great views of downtown Salt Lake as well as the entire valley. Mt. Olympus has been an extremely popular hike for many years because of its quick and easy access.The elevation gain is over 4,000 feet. It is about six miles and you need to count on a frill day. CONTACT FARRELL Another great option, if you have the better part of the day, is Lake Blanche. You start your hike from Brighton Ski Resort parking lot. The hike is about six miles and offers unbelievable scenery and frequent glimpses of wildlife. Travel to the south-ea- st corner of Salt Lake City and head up Little Cottonwood Canyon to enjoy a hike on the Red Pine trail. There will be signs identifying the trailhead about five to six miles up the canyon. Always check for exact trailhead location and any updates that might be available for your particular hike before heading out.
