Show 14 BEYOND CAMPUS Closing day essentials RACHEL ROBERTSON I Brace yourselves: Fiber is coming CONTRIBUTING WRITER CLAYTON GEISEL On March 24, Google made an announcement on its blog that Google Fiber will be coming to Salt Lake City. Google Fiber is a new platform for television and Internet. What sets Google Fiber apart from other Internet and television platforms like Comcast, Dish, DirecTV and Clearlink is its Internet speed. Plans have already been made for Westminster to switch its network connection to Google Fiberi Although the plans are still in the early process, students will eventually be using Google Altas closing day brings out the most interesting man in the world for festivities. Students can catch Altas closing day on April 26. Its that bittersweet time of the year. Ski and snowboard resorts close their doors as mountain bikes and hiking boots emerge and the chairs stop spinning. But, that doesnt mean the fun is over just yet. Students still have ample opportunity to laps, squeeze in some corn-snobarbecuing in the parking lot and goggle tanning. Here are five essentials to survive the closing days: 3. Water and food supplies: This is going to be an event and students are going to need sustenance. No one wants to drop $10 for a lodge all-d- ay hamburger unless the parents are visiting. w 1. Sunscreen: Students are out shredding and having a good time, but the last thing they want is to have their faces or other body parts get a terrible bum. First off, it hurts. Second, red, peeling faces never look good. 2. The "Gaper" or "Joey" costume: Whether students wear the classical Hawaiian shirt, throwback onesie or bathingsuit, its important to have an outfit to showcase any riding skills. The more ridiculous, the better skier or rider. 4. A killer playlist: the Whether driving up canyon or putting on boots at the car, students are going to need some beats to set the mood and keep Students the stoke high. Pro-tiare absolutely going to need p: f, some Turquoise Jeep and some Logic. Riff-Raf- 5. ' Aloe-Ver- a: Lets be honest, skiers and riders probably didnt put enough sunscreen on because they were distracted with other things like PBRs or trying to throw that three. They going to need some sun and wind bum relief. Students can purchase this item in advance and tuck it in the trunk of their car. Itll come in handy. Students reflect and give their take on what makes a memorable closing day. Silas Eldredge, senior, and Sarah Auchincloss, junior accounting major, agreed on the costume aspect of closing day as well. Its all about the funny dress, Auchincloss said. For Dylan MacNevin, Westminster alumnus, closing day had a different impact. It was bittersweet on my last closing day at Alta ever skiing down Highboy, MacNevin said. I thought to myself, this is the best skier I have ever been. All of my muscle and skiing has led up to this moment right now. Students can join in on the shenanigans at closing day at Alta on Sunday, April 26 and keep the season alive at Snowbird Mountain Resort until the end of May. I think that Google Fiber will affect more of the dorm rooms, and more of the academic stuff will tend to happen across the current network, which is still fast, Allred said. Allred said that about 70 percent of Westminsters network bandwidth is being used by students streaming videos from apps like Netflix and Hulu. It is not uncommon for students to be getting a lot of their entertainment from Netflix or that type of service versus traditional cable, Allred said. Google Fiber delivers Internet speed up to one gigabit, or 1,000 megabits per second, making it one of the fastest highspeed networks on the market. . Google Fiber also allows up to one terabyte of cloud storage. All of this means users will be able download faster and more data than networks like Comcast and Centurylink. The direction of digital media is shifting more toward platforms like Google Fiber, Netflix, Hulu, Soundcloud, Spotify and other sources of instant, streamable media. Less people are using traditional platforms like cable television. More students in the dorm rooms are streaming their favorite TV shows like Game of Thrones and House of Cards, and even streaming sports games rather than paying for the cable in their rooms, Allred said. The price of Google Fiber will be $70 per month for just Internet and $120 for Internet and television. There has been no clear date made as of when Google Fiber will be available in Salt Lake City. Google and Google Fiber will be planning as to where to cables lay out their fiber-opt- ic throughout the city in the next couple of months. |
