Show 9 ASWC elections have begun once more at Westminster. By the end of March, the newly elected will be sworn in for representation of the student body. For the past few years, voter turnout for Westminsters student elections fall between 10 and 13 percent. The national average for student elections is 59 percent. We cant get out to all of the . students every year during elections, said Andrew Hagedorn, senior sociology major and Speaker of the Senate. We want to get people psyched for elections. Its not this cool, flashy thing right now. We need students to get excited. To better help with voter turnout, and to get to know the candidates better, here are the students running for ASWC positions 2015-201- 6 and their platforms. This would allow students and faculty to a have a voice in the highest level of the college. "It's often difficult for students to know where to go, to express their opinions or to access information," Steur said. The map would allow access to information and allow opinions to be expressed. Wants to make ASWC 1 more down to earth. "We aren't the bosses or super '4 politicians," Lasiy said. "We won't make promises we can't keep. We want concrete things that can moke a difference in this awesome community." Promote student projects and "communicate more with students and focus on them, not us. We are the mediators, the tool, the port that makes student projects happen," Lasiy said. Increase the amount of money in ASWC's opportunity fund (money that is used for unexpected events such as a student wanting to visit a graduate school.) This money is used up every t ' 1 U 1 year. Improve bike security Amend the way internships are done in regards to required credits, so students can begin them earlier in tkeir college career. More empowerment and support to students on campus. "We all want to bring together more of the different groups on campus and our community," Vlasic said. Bring service projects to ASWC and t campus. Make Westminster more environmentally friendly. Create a "green space" that is a grass area or a garden development where students can relax. "I want to bring together the arts and sciences to create 1 i d something fun on campus," Smith said. "Collaboration is such a key." Speak up for the little people. "Clubs don't always take precedence." If there is a SAC event, Troost said he wants one or two clubs to be partnered with it so that it raises awareness and promotes the club. 4 s t |
