WHAT ARE THESE Thats not what I was talking ELEMENTS YOU SPEAK OF? A lot of them. All elements are atoms made up of protons, electrons. neutrons and with same the Anything number of protons is the same element, but atoms of an element can have different numbers of neutrons. These atoms are called isotopes, like uranium-23- 5 (92 protons and 143 neutrons) and 238 (92 protons and 146 neutrons). An isotope will be radioactive if it has a proton-to-neutrratio that makes it unstable, about. you mean ionizing radiation: the emission, transmission and absorption of energy from subatomic particles with very high Oh, kinetic energies. YES, AND I KNOW THATS BAD. Very true. Ionizing radiation, the stuff from nuclear bombs and horror movies, can cause sickness and death. It comes in three flavors: alpha, beta and gamma. Alpha particles are the largest and cause the most damage to cells, but can be stopped by paper. Gamma rays are the smallest but can go through several inches of concrete. on like 0. Some like and uranium elements, potassium-4- polonium, are considered elements radioactive of because none their isotopes are stable. WHERE DOES THIS STUFF COME FROM? that undergoes Anything radioactive decay. If an element is unstable, it will emit one or more of the above particles, thereby increasing its stability. This can happen csM ' WHERE ARE THESE ELEMENTS? is found Well, potassium-4- 0 carbon-14 in bananas and is in anything present containing carbon (that would include you), so pretty much Radioactive everywhere. COMING elements can be found in rocks, the fuel of nuclear power plants and in areas contaminated by radioactive fallout from nuclear bomb (St. George). testing THEYRE EVERYWHERE! AM I IN DANGER? No. Unless you live in an area that was exposed to radioactive fallout, you are perfectly safe. And no, living near an active or former nuclear power plant, even Three Mile Island, does not count. WHATS YOUR BIAS? Ive worked in a radiation medicine department, and I enjoy reading about nuclear accidents. I dont think you should eat radium to cure what ails you, but I do think there is a place for radiation in cancer treatment. Im also in favor of nuclear energy as part of a response to climate change and the energy crisis. DO YOU AGREE? DISAGREE? Send your thoughts & opinions to forumeditor westminstercollege.edu. Well print the Q&As next issue. What's the event? Debate involving five candidates running for Senate or House positions in the State Government. When is it? Extremely soon! Oct. 6-A- LL DAY FREE swag and register to vote at 10 a.m. in the Richer Commons with help from the Lt. Governors Office and the League of Women Voters. FREE food and beverages at 6:30 during the candidate meet and greet in the Tanner Atrium in the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts and Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory. FREE swag from the New York Times and candidate debate at 7:30 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall.
