Show Forum Notes from The Editor One of my primary goals is strengthening communication between the newspaper and the Westminster community. The Internet is where the process begins. Beginning today, The Forums official Web site is no longer attached to Westminsters. Weve prepared a new domain at www.thewestminsterforum.com to enjoy a greater degree of control and innovation over the digital component of the newspaper. Unrestricted by space and printer deadlines, the Internet provides a chance to feature content beyond the print edition as well as additional methods for readers to communicate their ideas and opinions to The Forum. To supplement the Web site, weve created a Face-bogroup simply titled The Forum. All members of the Westminster community are encouraged to register and participate by using the message boards and the wall to discuss articles and campus issues and to respond to questions. If the group is successful, we intend to sometimes print excerpts from the comments posted there. These initiatives can only succeed if theyre used, however, and so another personal goal is increasing Were investigating distributing copies of Welcome, new and returning students, to another readership. But now, it seems stores are crafting entire campaigns that stray from the normal fare and peddle more luxury items that have little to no actual value to a student. One product on the extreme end of the unnecessary scale is the bulletproof backpack, on sale for the low price of $175 - a great investment for worry wort parents or those who attend school in Baghdad. It would not be unfair to say this product is on sale in American schools to bank on fear. While the prodfear uct is designed to cash in on the of death, many of these back to school campaigns are counting on simpler, quieter fears: What ifIm not prepared? Or cool enough? Thats an entirely reasonable diagnosis, but Ive chosen, rather, to see my PMTAS as a kind of sixth sense that gives me access to a televisual spirit world where things like quality and cultural value no longer exist. No, in the spirit world, television isnt simply good or bad, significant or worthless. In the spirit world, man and television are one, and to speak critically of one would be to speak critically of the other. The problem with these journeys into the mystic is that, for me, watching television with wide-eye- d cynicism is synonymous with survival. Its my life blood, and if my PMTAS starts start spreading into the early evening prime time schedule, pretty soon I wont have anything left to hate.
