Show 50 Buys Under $50 in Sugar House Money spent on books leave little, but just enough, for a Sugar House outing Stephanie Petersen Staff Writer Those new to Sugar House area have certainly observed how active the area is from early in the morning until late at night. And while the Sugar House area may simply be a popular area for students because of the proximity, it is true that people from all over the valley come to Sugar House to shop and eat at the restaurants. It certainly is a combination of Salt Lake City s most interesting x businesses. Although there are a few chain stores, unique, local businesses are the heart of the neighborhood. The Sugar House neighborhood was founded in 1853 and named for a sugar mill that was never completed. In fact, no sugar has ever been produced here. The neighborhood officially stretches from about 200 E. to 2000 E. and from 1300 S. to 3300 S. The area that locals refer to as downtown Sugar House is around 2100 S. and where 1100 E. turns into Highland Drive the same narrow streets that find drivers wanting to poke their eyes out in midday traffic. But the area is busy for a reason. As a permanent resident of this area, I want to show you how great this place really is, and why we should count our blessings that Sugar House was not turned into an industrial area. Whether you are here for the first time, returning for another year, or a long-tim- e resident, there may be many places that you have yet to check out. Since weve all just paid our tuition and bought our textbooks, though, Im keeping the budget to under $50. I call up my friend Amanda to go on a shopping tour of Sugar House with me. We start by fueling up with a soy mocha ($3.85) for me and an iced coffee ($1.95) for her at SugarHouse Coffee. This place specializes in vegan food, and you can get a vegan Ricos Burrito ($5.95) or a vegan cookie ($2.45) to go with your drink. On weekends you may even catch some live music there (free), but the main show is the people watching from the patio. Connected to SugarHouse Coffee is Orions Music, a CD and record store committed to carrying a diverse selection. Amanda picks up the new Sonic Youth CD ($13.99) and Thom Yorkes solo album, The Eraser ($16.99). If you prefer your music the old fashioned way, the Record Collector and cassettes. Im in love carries vinyl, eight-tracwith a gorgeous Judy Garland collectible album ($20), while Amanda is into the Kate Bush colored vinyl ($15). With dorm decorating in mind, we head over to Wizards and Dreams, where a huge selection of takes up a whole wall incense (mostly $2.99-$3.9of the store.
