When not serving as mnwm President, Wharton, a Joiner joins the Ginny-Bet- h Westminster community as the new director of Student Life, the next step in a career path that was often allusive to her in the past. As a child Joiner could never decide what she wanted to be. She says while at the University of West Florida, I had seven majors on paper. In Joiners junior year her program adviser, Joy Tomp-kigave her some advice that helped lead Joiner to her new job at Westminster. Noticing that Joiner enjoyed working with students, Tompkin suggested, Why not do w hat I do? Joiner said she didnt realize that was an option. From there she pursued a major in international studies, graduating in 2003. Then Joiner went on to complete her graduate wrork at University of Western Florida, pursuing her masters in orientation and alcohol and other drug programming, graduating in 2005. After graduation Joiner job began her nation-wid- e search and met then Director of Student Life, Mark Feme, nerd spends his time doing logic puzzles in preparation for the LSATs and writing new ASWC His other interests include useless trivia, social activism (the topic of his senior thesis) by-law- s. and nomenclature. Joiner arrived in Utah on July 7 and started working on campus on July 11. Joiner is really excited to have students on campus after all the preptime during the summer. Joiners student interactions before Westminster include working as a resident adviser for three years at the University of Western Florida. Her work as a resident adviser gave Joiner some experiences to help her handle whatever Westminster's students might throw her way. As an RA Joiner had a funny mishap in which some boys lost a game of strip poker and ended up streaking down her hall. Joiner was just returning home when she spotted the boys. Their response was we impressed, thought you were gone, to which she replied thanks for thinking of me! Joiner was also a member in a large list of onoff campus clubs and groups includ- ing: Greek society, president of student senate, her schools version of student ambassador, resident adviser for three years, student government and campus activity board member. One thing Joiner is going to work on while here at West- minster is strengthening the Student Activities Committee. She hopes to work with Ray Bradford, ASWC vice president, and Tyson Smith, activities coordinator, to improve membership over the year. Joiner will reach out to commuter students to improve their involvement so they can feel like a more important part of Westminster as well. Feme says about Joiner, Were lucky to have her here at Westminster, and shes fit in wonderfully so far. Is to Pea He3eve discounts. offer card holders a political science minor? Hidden talent: Pronouncing the names of countries in Spanish. He is most proud of Inglaterra. Personal goals: Fighting global terrorism, reforming Social Security, getting into law school, becoming a Taboo board game champion and smashing imperialism. Wharton loves school, advocates regular attendance of class, and has some brainy ideas for the 20052006 school year. Earlier this summer he helped bring democrat Howard Dean to speak on campus. Wharton offers a tid-b- it of advice, The more you put into your college experience, the more you will get out of it. Stay involved. A strong supporter for increased student involve- ment and representation, Wharton has also defined a broadened set of goals, ambitions that extend beyond Wild Wednesdays. Most pressing on his agenda is, obviously, the stringent and devoted effort to eradicate terrorism in America. The reorganization of the Social Security program also weighs heavily on our presidents mind, often preventing a full night of undisturbed rest. Yet before Wharton can apply himself entirely to these issues, he plans on integrating the use of the newly introduced Griffin Card and applying a more cognizant campus wide environmental policy. When queried about what he might say if given the opportunity to speak with each Westminster student individually, Wharton replied, I would ask questions. I want to know what everyone likes and dislikes. I want to know about any frustrations and what I and the ASWC can do to improve student government. Westminsters student body president encourages students to become actively involved in Westminsters social and academic community and fully intends to represent the varied voices of this college. His door is always open, as is his mind and his ears to receive any questions, comments, or suggestions. Plans for a Westminster student discount card could make this idea a reality. Headed by the ASWC and Student Body President Chris Wharton, this new project is designed specifically for Westminster students. Similar to cards at Weber State and the University of Utah, The Griffin Connection will offer Westminster students various discounts at participating local businesses. The card will be available free of charge to all participating businesses to receive their discounts. Details concerning which businesses will be participating in the program are still tentative.
