Show City Sidewalks, IBusy Sidewalks Street tells a story WANT TO TAKE by Linda T. Christensen activity this time of year is to take around the city to look at the many a drive Christmas light displays. One of the best is The Christmas Story, a neighborhood lighting project that presents the biblical story of Christmas. For 27 years, the 33 homes of Wilson and Blaine Avenues have participated in a neighborhood tradition that keeps the true meaning of Christmas well represented. Every home, on the circle of Wilson and Blaine, displays a mural with verse taken from the Christmas story of St. Luke in the Bible. Sid Pocock, the committee chairman, has lived in the area since 1951 on the land just east of Westminster College. The land was once destined to be a college football field. The Christmas Story was started by the late Cy Curtis, said Pocock. He wanted to A favorite start a neighborhood project similar to Christmas Street on Glen Arbor. When the project first began, each home had a scripture, and paintings were added each year until every home had one. There have been quite a few new families move in during the last year, and we hope that they will be just as interested in keeping the community project going as we are, said Pocock. This year, the festival is scheduled for Dec. 9 in the Salt Palace Exhibit Hall 1. In previous years, it has been held at the Old Mill and Dickens Building across from the Triad Center. While Chanukah may fall around the same time as Christmas, it is totally removed from Christmas, and it is not a biblical holiday, according to Tova Gershowitz, wife of Academic Michael Gershowitz. Although Chanukah is not an important Jewish holiday like Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, Dr. Gershowitz pointed out that it has taken on more meaning in Christian countries since it is in competition with Christmas, especially where children are concerned. The Gershowitz family comes from New York where there is a much larger Jewish population, yet Tova said that since moving to Salt Lake City nothing customary in their family has changed. Vandalism is a big problem, said Pocock. This year the residents have organized a night watch to check the area for vandals. The police have also been notified and will put the area on patrol. There is a special feeling that one gets when driving around the circle on a frosty winter night.
