Show November 16, 1984 Forum Page 5 arts and entertainment Westminsters Theater Inspires Thespians to Take Courage by Stacy Butters Westminsters Courage Theater did not always want for the smell of grease paint and the roar of a crowd. In fact, the aura of the place was at one time much more reverent. In the days when Westminster was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, the place that is now the theater was used as a chapel in which daily convocation was held. Then, in 1948, at the urging of a group of students headed by a fellow named Melvin Gustoveson, the transformation from chapel to theater betran. Prior to 1948, the chapel was used as a theater of sorts, but there was no stage, no lighting and no sound system. Jay Lees, theater director at the time, recalls, We had no stage so we would build temporaries to get us through the show, and the only lighting we had was regular overheads. We brought in wood and built a stage. We ripped out the chai rs that were i n the place and replaced them with folding chairs. As for the lights, we scavanged what we could.
