Show Nov. 2. 1984 Forum Page 5 arts and entertainment flJ by Scott Kaiser If you wonder, like I do, why Hollywood doesnt turn out quality films instead of just quantities, you need to look no further than the directors. W ith the exception of a very small number, most directors nowadays couldnt direct a short subject in the glamour days of movie making. Think about the great directors: John Ford. Cecil B. DeMille, Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder, Walter Huston (whos still making films), Federico Fellini. D, W. Griffith, Otto Preminger, and Orson Welles. Im sure Ive missed someones favorite, but I feel the greatest director of all time is Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense and British humor. Hitchcock, who died in 1980, directed some of the greatest films of all time. Think back, in chronological order to, The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The 39 Steps (1935), The Lady Vanishes ( 1938), Foreign Correspondent ( 1940), Suspicion (1941), Saboteur (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946), Rope (1948), Strangers on a Train (1951), Dial Mfor Murder (1954), Rear (1954), To Catch a Thief ( 1955). The Trouble with Barry (1956), Vertigo ( 1958). North by A orth west (1959), Psycho (1960), The Birds (1963), and Frenzy ( 1972). Thats a pretty good resume, to say the least. H7-do- Hitchcock, however, stood out from other directors. First he was one of the most innovative directors in film history. In Rear Window, the entire film was seen from James Stewarts apartment window. In Saboteur, Hitchcock was on location from the Grand Canyon to New York City. In North by Northuwst, Sir Alfred went from New York City to the cornfields of Iowa, and then to the exciting climax on top of Mt. Rushmore. In Psycho, Janet Leigh, presumably the star of the film, was killed of the way through the film in the famous shower scene. It took Hitchcock more than 70 different setups to film the 45 second shower scene. It took one week to film that scene alone one-thi- Creativity Gives Old Wardrobe New Life Almost every color of the rainbow can be found in leather this fall. by Angie Babcock Its inevitable! The snow has already started to fall. Its time to pack away those shorts and tanks and pull out the pants and sweaters. This fall will introduce new fashion ideas that cost very little. All it takes is a little creativity. This fall there are two basic looks: the lored look and the new menswear look. mini-leng- rd itor not, Two other characteristics were strong in Hitchcocks films. One. he almost always made a cameo appearance, usually at the beginning of his movies. In 35 of his films. H itchcock gave his fans a chance to look for him. In fact, Hitchcock became so concerned that people were looking for him instead of following the plot that he began making appearances very early in his last few films. Second, Hitchcock was the master of the hero" film. From The 39 Steps to Frenzy, an innocent man was framed on flimsy evidence, then proceeds to run from both the police and the real criminals as he tries to clear his name and catch the real perpetrator. You find yourself on the edge of your seat, because you know who the enemies are, yet cannot do anything to help. That is a sign of a great movie. Unfortunately, there arent many great movies made these days. Maybe thats why I miss Hitchcock and the other great directors so much. Probably the biggest fashion hitch of the season are accessories. They give an outfit the complete look. Especially popular this fall are hats. One reason for their popularity is that hats can be worn with almost everything. Pants, skirts, suits and dresses can all be given a unique touch with the addition of a hat tai- The tailored look requires clothes that reflect confidence. Skirts take on new lengths from e for day wear, to for night hours. The main idea: be flexible. Matching pants and jackets are uncommon. The look is mixed plaids and stripes via Paris designer Kenzo. Classy thats the look of the new menswear. t Drawing an outfit together and giving it style thats the role of shoes. Shoes this fall are different than ever before. There are flats, pumps, boots: made of leather, suede, and velvet All can give an outfit the final punch. Shoes are also being seen i n colors that are new to the fashion scene: colors like green, purple, yellow and orange. Almost any color imaginable can be found on a shoe. ..xir-t-i-, T -- - 4 The main idea for fall fashion What to buy and what to look for Try dresses made of woven wools, gaberdines, knits, and flannels. Flashy colors mixed with subdued gentle colors. Solid colors or prints. Try different lengths, from long to short Dont be consistent! Be daring and surprising. Leather will be the playful hitch in fall fashion. Pants, skirts, belts, shoes, and jackets. All made with fashionable leather in a variety of colors. Red, purple, green, blue, and yellow. I be creative. Try new and different things. Give an old wardrobe new heights with just a few new items. If a tight budget is at hand, try buying mostly accessories. Things like earrings, big necklaces, socks, and bracelets can really add a lot to an outfit They are also realtively cheaper than buying a new outfit everyday. Fall fashion can be fun and exciting. With all the new and different things to try, planning a fall wardrobe would be a lot of fun. Just remember to be creative and invent new things because this fall anything goes! Eating Cheap: Restaurant Review by Chris Bertagnole On the corner of 1700 So. and 1100 E. is a small restaurant that should be brought to students attention. Scandia Kaffe House is located within easy walking distance of Westminster and is a delightful coffeesandwich shop. It is so close to Westminster that Im amazed more students here dont frequent the place. The prices are well within reach of a student budget and the food is great. A sand- - In conjunction with KXAT, B101, KL2Z Present: and XCFX wich is within a dollar of campus snack bar prices and the food is superior. The food is well prepared, and to your liking. Soup as well as sandwiches are available, as are pastries. Much could be said about the pastries, but mouthwatering" will have to suffice. Talk about the marzipan that ruled the world and Id know what you were describing. A piece of marzipan cake and a cup of coffee and . . . well, no description would do it justice. Try it for yourself and you will see. So its Saturday night, and you are on the pizza patrol. Try The Pie Pizzaria on 200 So. and 1320 E. downstairs. Your appetite will meet its match. With thick crust and the toppings of the gods laid before you, you will know what satiety is all about. The sauce brings out the best of each ingredient and the pepperoni is the best on any pizza anywhere. Fresh vegetables top the pizza, and in comparison to any other, the difference is ob- vious. Sandwiches are also on the menu, the most popular being the Zappi, basically a pizza folded over. E very Tuesday Starting November 13 December 11 at 8:30 pan. Another restaurant of noteworthy status is Dask Greek to Me in the basement of Crossroads Mall. Dask is the home of probably the best gyro in town. Everything on the menu is well pre- pared and delicious. The gyro plate is one dish worth trying. The disadvantage of Dask is that the high mall rent is reflected in the food prices. The - gyro plate and a drink is about $4.50 but the meal is worth the price indeed. ' t4i . i n i i n n i ) i n j v v t |
