Not that I havent done it before; its just the first time Ive done it literally. I should have known better. I am a warm weather fan when it comes to the Cubs and I was burned. My first and only true baseball love is the St. Louis Cardinals. I hated the Cubs until this season when I saw them down in Mesa, Ariz. during spring training and then finally visited Wrigley Field. Going to Wrigley Field is to a baseball fan what an extra drink is to an alcoholic. Its the topping on the cake. Wrigley Field is all its said to be. Its beautiful. I stood out on Waveland Avenue during batting practice and almost got a ball. By the (childishly chasing foul way, balls and home runs, but loving every minute of it) is the second best pastime at Wrigley Field. Then I sat in the world famous bleachers. Its just an incredible feeling for a sports nut like myself. The bleachers look huge on television, but in real life theyre quite small. Only about 3,000 fans can get into the bleachers, but the atmosphere is incredible. Youre right on top of the players. Youre smashed together with some of the most fanatic baseball fans in America. In addition, theres the ivy, planted by baseball maverick Bill Veeck (as in wreck) in the late 30s. Then theres the manually operated scoreboard and the daily National League standings kept with the pennants of each team, with the team in first place on top, and so forth down the pole. It had been 39 years since the fans had seen the Cubs pennant on top for so long. Seeing it fly there now, after finally winning the NL East, must be quite a ball-hawki- c John Dahmen glows after feeding Kaiser lunch. It brings to mind the old cliche, winning isnt everything" and in this case it rings true, for there is a different kind of success going on outside of the field, according to Tom Steinke, athletic director at Westminster. No fans have suffered like the Cubs fans. I guess it was my turn to suffer. It wouldnt have been fair for them to win the year I liked them. It wouldnt have been justice. Like one fan said, They wouldnt be the Cubs if they didnt break our hearts. So true. Intramural Football Scores Steinke said that the players felt this was a very satisfying year and that they worked very hard all summer to do so. They will be practicing once a week until next summer to be ready for the 1985-8- 6 season. Steinke said, The team was very representative, competitive, and I have good expectations for them in the future. He was also very impressed with the caliber and character of the players and by the great strides they made with playing such outstanding teams. well-coache- d, This is Jones leaps for reception during intramural football game. Last year they lost several players and their coach, and had budgeting and traveling problems. This year, they seem to have overcome these problems with a new coach, more experienced players and the support of the athletic committee. This means that the team is well on its way to becoming a winning soccer team, according to Y I Steinke. According to soccer Coach Chris Dorich, All that needs to be done now that we have the schools backing is to recruit new players, retain current team members and practice hard to handle next years schedule. The team is still a little shy on talent compared to the teams weve played. The schedule for next fall will include more home games, he added. The soccer team's last three games for this season were played in Colorado two weeks ago. then They played Regis College and lost Metro State College and lost and finally Colorado School of Mines and lost 7-- 1, 2-- 1, 4-- 0. f m a giant step compared to their first Westminster player fights for ball in Metro State game.
