Show Page 6 Forum October 5, 1984 feature articles Students Art Depicts Humanity, Individuality glass sculpture, to mannequin modification, to a look at self. by Chrin Bertagnole A Westminster junior from Kansas, Kurt Youngers is art. He claims he was a midget" at Kansas U. He transferred here to play soccer. I Currently, Kurt is enrolled as an art major. He is also on the custodial staff, the school soccer team and is a full-t- i me student. The only detail now needed to complete the picture is the mowhawk. One look and you know that Kurt is art. Though there is much to occupy his time, campus commitments have had benefits. For example, Kurt has the fourth floor of Foster Hall as a studio. He shares this with three other artists. This was arranged by an agreement that said he had to clean it out. Once rid of years of trash build up, home was created. His studio is amazing, to say the least. His creations vary from two dimensional paintings to paintings with three dimensional subjects. Kurt Yoangvnt enjoy h the freedom to create at IVestin innter. Projects range from scenarios of life behind the Zion Curtain, to doors and windows, to New Teachers Join Westminster Campus by Don Angleney e Five new and six new part-tim- e instructors are teaching at Westminster this semester. William Poole, Rich Erwin, Gary Stair, Elizabeth Herrick and Earl Snell are the new teachers. The new part-tim- e instructors are Elizabeth Reed, Joy Wolfe. Gail McCulloch, John Watkins, Gail Harlin and Julie Raison. William Poole is an assistant professor of chemistry. Poole shares his Malouf Hall office with a female tarantula. He teaches chemistry and people, general organic chemistry, and organic lie has a bachelors degree in chemistry and biology from the College of Idaho, a masters full-tim- full-tim- e y from degree in chemistry and Idaho State U niversity, and a doctorate degree in biological chemistry from Creighton University. micro-biolog- Poole taught chemistry, biology and other science courses at Aurora College in Aurora, 111., before accepting the appointment at Westminster. I really enjoy it here," Poole said, adding that both he and his wife are from southern Idaho. He said that this is as close to home as theyve been in 11 years. Poole said that he would like to see a course in geology reinstituted here at Westminster. Rich Erwin is an assistant professor of computer science. Erwin is both a new and a familiar face at Westminster. He has taught part- Continued on page 7 Among the places where art is appreciated is , Grunts and Postures, where Kurt at this time has some work displayed. He also had a booth at the Salt Lake Arts Festival this year. He was one of 70 applicants chosen out of 300 for a booth. He has accumulated a cache of doors and windows to paint on, too. As well as doors, windows draw out rich creative visualizations flowing out of the mind of the master. To look through one of his windows is to look into his mind. You can see reflections of his surroundings. He has competed in Utah intercollegiate art shows with his glass sculptures. He is also try- ing to arrange a show at Gayle Weyher Gallery for other projects. His goals include a n show at the Art Barn. Most often occurring on the canvas he paints are symbols of h surroundings. He uses clowns art courses too limiting, lot, and walls that separate the outside world Tom local artists. He does feel the lack of s acceptance (or ignorance) that keeDs here. starving Kurt is pleased with the freedom he has found here. Freedom an artist needs to create. Too manv rules take away from creation, choking the flow at the source. ' The clowns represent human nature; that in itself can be understood easily. His work is captivating. Messages leap from the canvas, wrap you in a feeling of wisdom and understanding of the human spirit and leaves you enriched, yet isolated from the sameness of life. one-ma- a mar-artist- Havinar found some What Kurt creates is not traditional by most standards. One of his paintings centers around a dead sparrow. It died near his easel which he says was an omen. The bird seems at home in a glass box attached to a painting of a brick wall.
