Learning a language, Lazarus said, teaches people to understand their own languages and to appreciate them. This realization prompted her to her teaching material. She learned, with the help of French friends, to speak casual French. Her classes are oriented toward preparing a student to get along alone in a French-speakin- g country. The subject matter ranges from slang to polite French, with an emphasis on conversation. Intense language study has helped Lazarus to appreciate her own language as well as the people with whom she works. She is well thought of by her colleagues and a welcome addition to the schools development department. Its a wonderful office, people are energetic . . . well make an effective team, she said. Lazarus is the founder and past president of Alliance Francais, a club for people who are interested in the literature, movies and culture thats like what Im doing now.
