Show April 6, 1984 Forum Page5 arts and entertainment mermaid. The comic chemistry between all seems to be perfect, a fact that cannot be overlooked. This film is the surprise of the year and may be the best film of 1984. Hotel New Hampshire This is another John Irving novel put to film. And, like The World According to Garp, if you havent read the book, you are likely to be totally lost. The film tries to capture all the emotions and characteristics of the book, but fails to have a basic plot. Police Academy Animal House Joins the Police Force would be a better title for this film. It consists of a series of senseless, ridiculous events that are put together into a movie. However, if you avoid looking for any redeeming social value, as I did, you will th oroughly enjoy this film. The plot pertains to a police force which has been ordered to accept all applicants who wish to join the police department. So, naturally, every looney-tun- e available attends the police academy. Steve Guttenberg plays the head looney, a lifelong loser who was given the choice of jail or the police academy. Although he may not make you forget John Belushi, Guttenbergs performance is the key to the film if his character had been lousy, so would have been the film. Guttenberg plays his role perfectly, not taking himself or the role too seriously. The supporting cast is also good, led by George Gaynes, who played the incompetent actor who fell for Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. Gaynes plays Commander Lassard, the equally incompetent head of the police academy. G.W. Bailey, who most recently has been on MA SH and St. Elsewhere, plays the sergeant who is given the task of getting rid of the worstof the recruits. Newcomer Michael Winslow is hilarious as a recruit having the ability to make the most unusual noises, such as machine gun fire and squeaking shoes. The others in the supporting cast provide equally interesting characteristics and make for an entertaining film. This may not enlighten you, but it certainly will make you laugh. Splash This is the best film Ive seen in a long time. Its a gem from start to finish and I guarantee a good time for all. Director Ron Howard shows that his years in show business were not wasted. Howard, who is only 30, is wise beyond his years when it comes to directing. He has a great g sense and knows how to please an audience. Making a film about a mermaid demands it. Yes, a film about a mermaid who falls in love and follows her man to New York. What follows is a series of unpredictable events which makes this film a standout. film-makin- Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah star as man and mermaid, and both performances are excellent. John Candy also stars, and he is finally given a role which fits his rather unique acting style. In fact, this is his best performance since Stripes. Another SCTV alumnus, Eugene Levy, also brings class and talent to a difficult role of the bad guy who tries to prove that Hannah is a Beau Bridges, Jodie Foster, Nastassja Kinski and Rob Lowe star in John Richardsons version of the story of the bizarre Berry family. Despite these fine actors, the film just doesnt make it Newsweeks Jack Kroll put it best when he wrote that Hotel New Hampshire wants to be both charming and tough: a fairy tale with wings of steel. Its engines roar, but it doesnt fly. Oscar Predictions Best Film: The Right Stuff Hollywood has been on a history kick recently ( Chariots of Fire and Ghandi ), so I think this fine film will edge out Terms of Endearment for the big prize. Best Actress: Shirley MacLaine (Terms of Endearment) I have no doubt about it Best Actor: Robert Duvall (Tender Mercies) Duvalls the only American up for Best Actor and I think hell beat out Michael Caine and Albert Finney. Best Supporting Actress: Glenn Close (The Big Chill) Shell edge out Linda Hunt (Year of Living Dangerously). The saga of the eccentric Berry Family, The Hotel New Hampshire, " is set in New Hampshire, Vienna novel and New York City spanning the years 19S9 to 1972 and is based on John Irving's which has captured the imaginations of mill ions around the world. Stars pictured (left to right) are Jod ie Foster, Paul McCrane, Beau Bridges, Jennifer Dundas, Dorsey Wright, Nastassja Kinski and Rob Lowe. best-selli- Best Supporting Actor: Jack Nicholson (Terms) This may be the closest race. Dont be surprised if Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff) takes home the Oscar. Food Stamps. The continuing drama of two unemployed families, one Hispanic, the other Black, and the trials, tribulation and loves they endure while looking for work in their ghetto neighborhood. SH These are just a few ideas. When you stop to think for a minute, they arent any worse than Night Court, The Dukes ofHazzard, or any of the other mindless drivel which now commands so much of the networks viewing time. In an age when Hill Street Blues is the exception, as a quality show, instead of the rule, I wouldnt even be that surprised to see one of my suggestions make it onto the air. After After MA SH. Since After MA it probably needs a sequel. If Potter, Klinger, and Mulcahey couldnt work David K. Neidert As my final column for this year, Id like to suggest some changes in network programming. After all. Grant Tinker (president of NBC) needs someone to do his work for him. heres a few show ideas for 1984-8Hill Street Whites. Ill admit that very few So 5: people watched Bay City Blues this year, but in the sequel department, this one cant miss. Did you ever wonder what depraved soul worked in the hospitals near Frank Furillos precinct? Well, this show answers that and allows the cops from Hill Street Blues to make cameo appearances when they come in with various scrapes, wounds, and deviants. Best Director: James L. Brooks (Terms) He has history on his side; he won the New York Critics Award and 38 out of the last 40 winners also won the Oscar. South Bronx. Two overly precocious rich kids are suddenly orphaned and go to live with their parents maid in the South Bronx. The shows only problem is that the kids would only survive one episode. didnt work by ng too well, together, how about the rolicking frolics of Hawkeye and Major Winchester going into practice together? And if that didnt work, yet another sequel could be don e Trapper John, M.D. Polio Ward. Since everyone likes nostalgia-pro- ved by the banality of Laveme and Shirley and Happy Days (not to mention the spate of theatrical nostalgia films) and since everyone likes hospital shows, how about one where the two come together to show that the Good Old Days werent. One final word before I close this column for the year. With the state television is now in, if you have a choice between readi ng a book or watchi ng the tube: READ! Youd be surprised how bad television looks after one good book. Travel Plans Are Set for May T erm T rips by Denise Janke Athens. A chance for the people from Dynasty, Dallas, and all those ritzy soaps to go shopping. Ive often wondered what would happen if Blake Carrington and J.R. Ewing met in a neutral setting.
