For instance, concerns were raised in the Forum, both in an editorial last spring and in our Feb. 17 issue this semester, regarding parking viscongestion previously caused by itors for high school basketball tournaments played in Payne Gymnasium. Sophomores will not be required to live in the dorms next year. There will be a 10 percent discount in rates for sophomores who do choose to stay, and there will be a 15 percent discount in juniors and seniors rates. Thats hot all. Computer science majors con-ver- ns appear to have been taken quite seriously. Students have recently been included in the interviewing process to locate a new department head. (See the article about computer science majors concerns in the Feb. 3 issue of the Forum.) Thanks, folks. Its beginning to look like you care. And, since we know you do, we know youll solve another continuing problem. Student organization offices now housed in the basement of Shaw Center must either be moved or brought into compliance with the fire code. The fact that Etosian, Photo Lab, and Forum facilities do not comply with the code is not a satisfactory reason for denying heat to staff members who are committed to keep office hours and work late into the night completing layout work, nor is it an adequate reason for denying improvements in dark room facilities. What we need to know is how can these offices be caused to comply with the code? If such compliance is prohibited by building structure or then where can we the costs of move? Should the Forum staff hold a fire drill to prove that we can escape through the closet and over the ceiling, into the bathrooms and out through the required second exit? Well do it, or well move, whatever is needed, if we can just get some heat by next winter. letters to the editor Restore Consistency to Dorm Policies Dear Editor: ten up one unlucky dorm member, who was since asked to leave the dorm. My question is: has inconsistency given a person, who does not have the right type of leadership abilities, the wrong type of power? Now that Westminster is out of the financial red and into the black, I hope the administration will not stop in their efforts to build Westminster into an ideal institution. To do this, I feel that the college must gain consistency in its policies especially in policies pertaining to male and female dormitories. Along with other inconsistencies, there is the case of two students who were both written up for the same offense a food fight in SAGA. Both At the beginning of the 1983-8- 4 school year, dorm students were informed of the policies for both of the dorms. One of the policies stated that males could not take showers in the female Now it seems that this dorms, and has been policy changed by a few, unselected students to permit females to shower in the showers on the first floor of Carleson Hall, the mens dormitory. There was no vote by the dorms as a whole and very few people are aware vice-vers- persons were members of Hall Council; one, a female, and the other, a male. The male was kicked off of Hall Council, while the female is still a member of both Hall Council and Peer Council. Is this the type of consistency Westminster wants? There are many rules that have been changed to suit one person while others are becoming scapegoats for anothers ego. I do not feel this is consistency and I wish, at this point in time, that I had never been a resident of the dorm. Believe in What Y ou Are Doing or Leave Dear Editor: a. Im writing this out of sheer frustration, and also in the hope that those pessimists proaching will avoid my path. ap- I had a really hard time getting into school last semester. After different study methods, threats and motivators, and needless to say, quite a few sleepless nights, I finally found out what my problem was. nine-hundr- of this new policy. Another inconsistency in the mens dorm deals with the choosing of Resident Advisers (RAs). Carleson Hall had three RAs until the beginning of spring semester. The three were chosen for their leadership abilities during the previous year. Now, with the opening of a new wing in Carleson, the hall director has appointed a fourth RA. The new RA was not chosen as the others were and the job was not opened for applications by other eligible members. ed About twelve of us (student here at Westminster) were watching the national news. Within the first three seconds of the broadcast, all but two of the twelve students watching began making comments pro and con about the situation. The thing that set me off was the fact that every comment made was negative. These students proceeded to make negative statements for Since the new RA was appointed, he has writ 30 minutes. Not just on the news, the commercials and the following program, but also about who had to get what homework done from which bleep, bleep teacher and for which bleep, bleep classes. At first I was angry, then frustrated. The reason was because the very first complaints were about something that I stood for and believed in. Thats when it hit me. These students, other students and teachers comments and complaints about Westminster were subconsciously effecting me. Because I was not yet secure with my decision in believing in Westminster, I let all these pessimistic views make up my mind. I began believing them. This school has been around a long time. And yes, we have had our share of problems, maybe a little more than our share. But Westminster has pulled through every time. During the last cou the next If rules are to be made and policies are to be followed, then I feel there would be a great deal gained if the administration took a long, hard, look at the activities and inconsistencies in Westminsters dormitories. At a time when the college is so concerned with being consistently in the black," I feel it would be worth the efforts of all involved to assure that future dorm students are not met with the same disappointments that I have met with this year. Richard Lashway ple of years, doubt about this schools survival has been in a lot of peoples minds, including those in the surrounding community. This past year a lot of changes have been made for the better of our school, but the negativism and the doubts still exist in much of the community. It will take time to show that once again weve pulled through. It is going to take even longer if the most important people to this schools existence the faculty and the students dont believe in it. I believe in Westminster. I will continue my studies here because I believe in Westminster. For those of you who have doubts, positive things are happening. For those of you who dont want to believe in the positive things, then I only have one question: Why are you still here? The success and survival of this school lies in our believing. If we believe we can, or if we believe we can't, were right." John Dahmen, I can appreciate your preference for the Summer Olympics to the Winter Olympics, but some of us like both of them. Wed also like a sports column that covers sports, not opinions. Your opinions are fun, but sometimes irritating to read; besides there are enough opinionated columns in the Forum (Movie Reviews, TV Talk). So lets have some Winter Olympic coverage with only a few comments. The cheerleading story was quite informative, Did anyone in the adminbut slightly istration realize last fall that cheerleaders were one-side- d. not wanted by the soccer players or by a majority of the students in the stands? Question: how many soccer teams have cheerleaders? Answer: one Westminster College and, yes, we were the laughing stock of the soccer teams we played. Cheerleaders in football are understandable. Soccer is a fast moving, nonstop sport for at least 45 minutes. There is really no opportunity to watch the cheerleaders, or a need for cheering. The spectators are very cheery all by themselves. Since the cheerleaders are for the soccer team, we leave the decision to have or not to have cheerleaders up to them? Nanci Boyd shouldnt Infrequent Eaters Ask For an Alternative to Current SAGA Food Service Program Dear Editor: These last six months, I have been a regular, if not hearty, eater of food provided by SAGA dorm food services. For this service, I pay the same price as all other dorm students who eat at SAGA. 1 pay the same price whether I eat there three times a day or, as 1 regularly'do, once or twice a day. I just dont eat as much as some do and, therefore, only go to meals when I am hungry. I am concerned with the amount I am paying for the amount I eat. For a person who eats the varied number of meals that I do, wouldnt it be cheaper and easier to have an alternative plan to eating at SAGA. At this point in time, there is no alternative, other than just not to eat at SAGA and fix your own meals. But unless you have a doctors statement saying you should noteat at SAGA, you are required to pay the specified amount for SAGA. If an alternative to SAGA could be offered, it would cut the cost of room and board and allow me the freedom of eating desired meals without feeling that for every breakfast, lunch or dinner I miss, I am losing money just because I am not hungry.
