Most of the events in the Winter Olympics are boring. Granted there are a few exceptions, like when the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team beat the Russians and went on to win the gold medal or when Eric Heiden won five gold medals in speed skating. The only event I watch with regularity is alpine skiing. The Winter Olympics are held at a time when the weather is dreary and at this time of the year I eat, sleep and drink basketball, especially since the Jazz are doing so well. For me the Summer Olympics offer so much more. During their time, I can be found glued to the tube watching basketball, boxing, swimming, diving, weight lifting and the various track and field events. hours of television coverage, much of Plus which is repetitive, from Sarajevo is exorbitant And too much garbage is used as filler. For many Americans the events must be viewed at night, often after one knows the outcome of the competition. Its disappointing to watch a game, or an event, for which the winners have been announced on the evening news, because so much of the enjoyment is taken away. 63-1- 2 Intramural Basketball Scores Triple Monday (Jan. 30) C 56 Wolverines 66 The Cadillacs Weekend Atheletes The Cadillacs Tuesday (Jan. 31) 35 G.U.T.S. 45 The Wolverines Eagles This years Summer Olympic games have added drawing power for Americans, being in Los Angeles. People around the world will tune in to watch the 1984 Winter Olympics and I hope they enjoy them. As for me, I will wait till summer for my Olympic enjoyment, but do wish the U.S. athletes in the Winter Games well, especially those with a good chance for gold, like Tamara McKinney, Scott Hamilton, Rosalynn Sumners, Phil Mahre and good luck to everybodys underdog, Bill Johnson.
