Show December 2, 1983 Forum Page 2 Letters to the editor Students Ethics Challenged Over All Star Balloting ballot It has been said that all NBA teams stuff the boxes. This year, Westminster students are helping. Why? Because it's a common practice . . . because a college staff member, a key role model for students, is supervising the project ... or because the college really needs the $70 NBA basketballs theyll receive for each five boxes of ballots punched out and returned to the Utah Jazz? All-St- ar Valid or not, the above reasons dont hold a candle to the reason for not participating in this project its not ethical. NBA basketball teams are supposedly given a supply of punch cards for All Star balloting by spectators who attend NBA games. When ballots are available at more than one game, regular supporters have the advantage of casting multiple votes. One could argue that multiple voting by the select group of regular supporters is unethical. Still, theres a real difference between multiple voting by regular fans and mass voting by Westminster dorm students. The regular fans have the opportunity to view the All Star candidates in action. Each game attended can provide cause for a change of vote. The only cause for a change Westminster voters might confront is the mediocrity of assembly-lin- e punching. We dont know if all of Westminsters 50,000 ballots are punched yet, nor how much effect they will have on final selection of All Star team members. We do feel, however, that the price of even one new basketball (10,000 votes) is too high. These people have lost sight of the true purpose of UIA and are more interested in personal vendettas, regardless of the effects such squabbling may have on future UIA delegations. I was very disappointed The real pupose of UIA is to promote the interests of college students in Utah. The bills that were passed during UIA are to be lobbied at the Utah State Legislature. This will be done effort Each school will set up a commitee through a state-wid- e to work on their respective campuses coordinating lobbying activity. Here at Westminster we will be establishing the Student Action Committee to work on this project The committee will be established by the ASWC President and will be under her effort as authority. The members will work on the state-wid- e well as student issues here on the Westminster campus. This group will be responsible for administering the UIA delegation in the future. With these changes, UIA will mean more than a commitment free weekend at a local hotel it will be a year-lon- g to student issues. Applications for the Student Action Committee are available in the ASWC office. The deadline for application is December 9th. I strongly encourage you to apply and help do something constructive for a change. Mike Pieper UIA Delegate Attention Pencil Sharpeners As much as I love Westminster College and enjoy being a student here, there is one characteristic that disturbs me. You would think that Westminster College, being the prestigious higher learning institution that it is, would facilitate its students with at least one pencil sharpener per room! After all, isnt a lot of time in college spent writing and erasing and or maybe Im outdated and choose to write in pencil instead of pen? As an example, I went to take an exam in Philosophy a five-paexam where I wanted to take the exam in pencil to be able to erase and maintain a neatness factor to my bluebook. I spent ten precious minutes into exam time looking for a pencil sharpener in Malouf Hall, upon discovering that the only place where a sharpener might (I say that because nobody I asked seemed to know where one was located) be located was behind a closed, locked lab door! rt With the tuition increase and all other fees which students are burdened with, and with the excess of funds created with the higher enrollment, couldnt it be possible to get some pencil sharpeners installed, and correctly installed in each classroom? She is from a small high school and feels comfortable with Westminsters smaller atmosphere. Depending on the person, I would recommend Westminster to them, says Schultz. They have to like the closeness; for example, no one ever asks what you are doing because they already know. What Westminster does need is a greater emphasis in the Fine Arts, said Schultz. When I decided to come to Westminster I was told I could have a private room to practice piano in and a good, competent teacher. I have not found a teacher, I dont have a private practice room, and I feel like ten years of experience is going down the drain.
