That means the NBA will be playing an 82 game schedule this season to eliminate is is John Dahmen 1 seven teams from championship consideration. This is perhaps the best team the Jazz have put on the court since coming to Utah. The team plays in the weakest division in the league, the Midwest, and there will be greater parity in the NBA this year. The cornerstone of the Jazz is forward Adrian Dantley, the teams captain. Dantley played in only 22 games last year because of a wrist injury, and the team still won 30 games. After having surgery, the former NBA scoring champion showed that he is recovered. In several exhibition games, he looked like his old self, scoring from everywhere. If one didnt know better, one would think the Jazz have two Dantleys. So who is the imposter, you ask? Why, its John Drew, who uses the same strong inside moves to score points and draw fouh as A.D. Drew went through drug rehabilitation last year in the voting for Comeback Player of the and was runner-u- p Year. In the backcourt, the Jazz are very stable with starters Darrell Griffith and Rickey Green. Griffith (alias Dr. Dunkenstein) has, in three years with the J azz, averaged 20.9 points per game and electrified the fans with his thunderous slam dunks. Westminster Colleges ski club will sponsor its annual ski trip 1984. Club President Mike Weston claims the budget is the hardest thing to overcome. The five-da- y ski trip is planned during spring break in Jack-so- n Hole, Wyoming. The trip will cost $95, which includes lodging, day and night skiing, transportation, a wine and cheese party, and membership in the club. Accommodations have been arranged for 200 students, with 4 to a room. The trip is open to e all students, not just ski club members on a on Feb. Karate Builds Discipline You probably figure Karate is something you would learn or so you could amaze your friends by only for crumbling cinder blocks with your bare hands. Not so, according to Otto Johnson, an alumni of Westminster, who teaches a Karate class each Tuesday at 9 p.m. and Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the dance room of the gym. Johnson feels that Karate is an excellent way for students to build discipline for their studies by establishing a mental base for learning new material. Practice of the movements makes the mind more receptive to new learning experiences," Johnson added. Johnson is a first degree black belt in the Japanese style of Karate called Wado-Rywhich means Way of Peace." He was named outstanding Karate player in the 1979 Wado-Ka- i World Karate Championships and is a member of the Japan Karate Federation. Right now, according to Johnson, credit hours are not available for the Karate class but if more people would show an interest in the Westminster Karate Club, the road could be paved for the class being offered for credit in the future. Classes are $20 a month, and are ongoing, so new students can start at any session. Johnson said anyone interested could come to one class, For further information on classes, contact B ill Tatomer in the Campus Life directors office. At a Legislative Assemski giving bly meeting last spring, the ski club requested $2,000 but was given $300 matching funds. Ski club has to match whatever the school gives them. Its hard to raise money when you dont have any to begin with, said Weston. In the immediate future, the ski club will approach the Legislative Assembly with another budget request The amount is now undecided. I do I think there is a good chance ski club will get more money if they request it" said Julie Bell, ASWC vice president There is an excess of money this year due to an allowance for a decrease in enrollment when there was actually an increase, according to Bell. Ski club was given only $300 because Legislative Assembly felt they could make enough on their own or else charge club members a higher membership fee. All ski club members are also members of the National Collegiate Ski Association (NCSA), according to Dennis McGarvey, director of student life. NCSA will be showing approximately 50 films at Westminster this year. NCSA also will be sponsoring ski races: four in Colorado and one in Utah. The five down-hiski races will take place Jan. 7 - Feb. 19, 1984. ll Anyone with questions can contact Weston through Debbie Jenkins or Dennis McGarvey, the ski club advisers. Green is among the fastest guards in the league. Last year he used his lightning quick moves to rank second in the league in steals (2.82) and third in assists (8.9). At center, the Jazz start a 7'4 auto mechanic, turned professional basketball player, named Mark Eaton. Eaton should change his last name to Eat em, because of the way he stuffs the basketball down the throats of opposing players. When the Jazz picked Thurl Bailey in the NBA draft last June, the crowd at the Salt Palace booed. After playing in the first six games, the boos have turned to cheers. Bailey has shown great athletic ability in blocking shots, scoring, and rebounding.
