Show December 10, 1982 Forum Page 2 Follow-U- p and Editorial Comment Student Government Issues Its difficult This is the last issue of the Fall semester. The Forum has undergone many changes since the first of the year. I hope these changes have been viewed as advances in the quality of the paper. Id like to take this opportunity to thank my staff for all their hard work. They have put up with much through the development of the paper. Their efforts have been steady and improving. Im going to hate to lose any of you to the rest of the curriculum needed for your graduation. However, 1 am looking forward to the new journalism class in the spring. I feel certain that the new writers will be as interested as the last group to make the paper a quality, and an interesting, publication. Again, thanks to the old and welcome to the new. Anne Sanders, Editor to report a serious news concern bills of several when it involves past-du- e (especially thousand dollars) and accurately represent all interests. My left many story in the November 26 issue of the Forum readers puzzled and some offended. Obviously, the article titled, Financial Reports Delayed didnt answer many of the Past'Due Expenses Questioned, questions discussed; nor was it meant to. The intended message of the article was simply that Assembly members havent been provided with answers to their financial questions; and on November 20, the ASWC treasurer and the editors of the newspaper and yearbook were only able to guess at the answers to these questions and did not seem to be effectively communicating with each other. Rochas has not been advised My statement that of final payment on the Jostens bill does sound like a fact as the result of a serious failure on my part to quote or attribute this statement as Rochas opinion. Mike Black, ASWC president, told Anne Sanders, editor of the Forum, after publication of the November 26 article, that he did write a note to Rocha about the final payment on the Jostens account. I have been unable to contact Black to confirm this point prior to writing this follow-up- ; but 1 do feel his exception to the unattributed statement, true or since I should never have written it, as is, not, is valid without checking with him. ... Steve Morgan, college business manager and treasurer, has also contacted newspaper staff members to offer records and facts which might finally resolve the questions and different viewpoints raised in the November 26 report. Ive given serious thought to whether I should follow the resolution of this matter through administrative channels, and have finally decided I should not. My news article concerned the fact that student body officers may not have resolved these matters and if the questions are resolved, concerned Assembly members werent aware of resolution on November 6 or on November 18. The next Assembly meeting is now scheduled for December 9. My news follow-u- p on this story will again and concern questions answers gathered and communicated between student government bodies and officers as reported in that meeting. Im confident that most of the questions raised on November 26 will be resolved, supported by facts, and communicated to Assembly members the morning of December 9, and the Forum will have a positive update for concerned students when they return to school Spring semester. Kathleen Hammond letteRS to the editoR Student Shares Change of Heart Westminster College Recently I shared some negative views on this paper with its editor-in-chie- f. They included my observation of staff contentions, the papers new title, outward appear ance, inner content, and overall tone. It appears that I was only one of many to do so. Poor Anne!! I was sorry to learn that I was part of a general dumping movement. But I perceive that recent efforts have been made to meet the needs of a student body public. My chief objection was the formal tone of the paper which the new name appeared to dictate. The content seemed (to me) to be gauged to avoid controversy, or anything else of interest to excitement, students in the real world. I believe my complaint mentioned something about the papers reading like a P.R. release, reassuring someone of our maturity and studiousness around here. But, as I said, changes have been made. The I liked it! November 19 issue liked the candid photos, collegiate-minde- d (even in innuendo visuals. sexual There was advertising. gross) and frustration vent. were given Controversy, anger, Human interest was in focus. Student honors were given space. Student reaction to editor policy was printed and reacted to by editor. Editor wrote as a Real Person. Chuck Johnson defended the paper against the message contained within the crude visual to the left of his article. Wonderful! I still am not too crazy about the feel or color of the paper, but the new name I can live with if the tone continues to be more outrageous (and, therefore, interesting) than decorous, safe (and, therefore, boring). Please continue the looser style. And readers, respond in writing. Your stuff makes for fun reading for us all. I Sincerely, Carol J.
