Backman earned his B.A. from the University of Utah in Sociology and Philosophy in 1926, his M.A. in Philosophy from Stanford University in 1934, and his Ph.D. in education from the University of Utah in 1960. I have been affiliated with education for 54 years this coming January, reflected Backman on his background, I have taught as many as twenty different subjects. In the Spring of 82, Backman officially became the registrar. I have heard from students over the years that their reaction to the position of registrar is that of guardian of the gate. I am here to help students graduate from college, not delay or prevent them from graduating. Currently, Backman is working with Dr. Douglas Steeples in an effort to streamline registration. We are working on a plan so students will not have to wait in any lines when registering. At 78, Backman still has no plans for permanent retirement. If I were ever to find that I was being kidded about my contribution, then I would quit. But as long as my contribution is appreciated, then I will stay. He will explain the philosophy behind Japanese Karate and how to become involved in this newly formed club. The club meets Monday and Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. in the Payne Gymnasium. Anyone can come, regardless of experience or ability, says Seidel. According to the instructor, it is not a learning experience, but rather a means of relaxation, shaping up, and getting your mind off pressures and the bustle of college life. Mr. Seidel is a graduate student in chemistry and a teachers aid at the University of Utah. He has been involved in Karate for eight years and has gained his black belt. For students who would like to join the club, Seidel suggests they come to the Payne Gymnasium, either upstairs or in the Dance Room, on Monday or Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. self-defen- se Marianne H. Their expectations are greater, but they are less prepared for some of the frustrations of classwork and campus life than are traditional freshmen. Time is really the key, said Hartney. In the past, working students and those with family commitments have had problems attending daytime preview activities. The plan for evening workshops is intended to accommodate adult time schedules.
